One of the world's outstanding singers, who this season celebrates
his fourteenth anniversary as leadi.ng tenor with the Metropolitan
Opera Company.
Born in New York City, Jan Peerce possesses a voice which is en-
tirely American trained. Although he worked his way through col-
lege by playing the violin, Mr. Peerce was introduced to the great
Maestro, Arturo Toscanini, because of his powerful tenor voice.
Describing Peerce's voice as the most beautiful he had ever heard,
Toscanini engaged the young tenor for a concert he was conducting
at Carnegie Hall. In 1941, Peerce made his debut at the Met, and
has been performing there, in nation-wide recitals, over - radio and
television ever since.
Ip 1949, he became the first singer in the 73-year history of the
New York College of Music to be accorded an honorary doctorate
of music.
HARRY HERSHFIELD
A prodigious toastmaster and famous radio and television jokester,
Mr. Hershfield., was born in Cedar Rapids, Ia. He is said to have
introduced more celebrities at more important functions than any
other toastmaster in the U.S.
In his early days, Hershfield won his reputation as a cartoonist, for
25 years drawing such features as Homeless Hector, . Desperate
Desmond, Abe Kabbible and According to-Hoyle. He also was a
sports cartoonist, wrote theatrical reviews and conducted a New
York column, Broadway Unlimited.
His chief claim to national fame came on "Can You Top This?"
NBC's popular program. He has written scenarios for Hollywood
films, and is the author of several humorous books.
MICKEY WOOLF
Again this year, Mickey Woolf and his orchestra will be featured
for dining pleasure. They also will play the background music for
the. guest artists of the evening.
