Formation of Albert Einstein Lodge
Sterns from Near-Fatal Accident

A blood brother of Bnai Brith
is now becoming one of its
staunchest fraternal brothers.
When Louis Levinson, proprie-
tor of Radom Tailors on Dexter
Blvd., broke his neck in an ac-
cident a few years ago, Bnai
Brith rushed 39 pints of blood to
. aid in his recovery.
Even more than that, however,
Levinson, during a stage of his
fight for survival, was at the
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Here, a full-time Jewish chaplain,
Rabbi Aaron Segal, ministers to
all Jewish patients.
The attention given Levinson
by Rabbi Segal bolstered his
hope and gave him a will to
live, despite thejact that he is
still confined to a wheel chair
and trussed up in a harness.
Only recently has Levinson
been able to move about and to
resume his trade once more. But

during his confinement, he placed
at his bedside membership blanks
for Bnai Brith.
These he encouraged his
friends to take and to fill out.
Levinson had been in this country
only a few years before his ac-
cident, being a survivor of the
Nazis. Many of his friends and
associates, likewise, were new
Americans.
The result of the filled-out
membership blanks is the forma-
tion of the Albert Einstein Lodge
of Bnai Brith, which will hold
a second organizational meeting
at 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Beth
Aaron Synagogue.
Significantly, there are 39
members who form the nu-
cleus of the Einstein Lodge—
one for each of the pints of
blood received. At Wednesday's
meeting, Levinson expects that
there will be present well over
the 100 members necessary to
receive a charter from the na-
tional office of Bnai Brith.
Instrumental in aiding the for-
mation of the new lodge are Leo
Polk, membership chairman of
the Greater Detroit Bnai Brith
Council, Walter Berlow, Alfred
H. Bounin and Henry Wald, also
representing the Council.

The celebration of the High
Holy Days in Jewish capitals
throughout the world did not
pass without incident or surprise.
Reports from behind the Iron
Curtain indicated that Jews in
Moscow and Bucharest crowded
into synagogues on Yom Kippur,
and in both, community prayers
were offered for the recovery
of President Eisenhower, strick-
en the day before with a heart at-
tack.
(See Commentary, Page 2)
Most of Bucharest's 100,000
Jews celebrated the holiday in
its synagogues. The main
thoughts of the Jews were turned
toward Israel, a New York Times
dispatch said.
The holiday also brought signs
that the Romanian government
was preparing again to permit
emigration of Israel-bound Ro-
manian Jews. The dispatch esti-
mated the number of Roman-
ian Jews at 250,000.
Reports from London indicated
that for the first time in its
histoiy, the government con-
trolled Cairo Radio broadcast
Kol Nidre services from the
Egyptian capital. The program
eminated from the main syna-
gogue in Cairo.
A tragic note was struck at
services in the native quarter of
Casablanca during Yom Kipper
services when a synagogue was
stoned by unknown persons.
One of the worshippers was in-
jured when he was hit on the
head by one of the stones.

ERRATA ... The correct name

WORD NOW comes that Jackie
Gleason will not be the featured
attraction at the Detroit Business-
men's Group of the City of Hope
dinner in November .. , Seems
that the CBS TV comic star will
not fly . . . and so would not be
able to get back to New York in
time for his television show .. .
General Motors offered to fly
him in one of its private planes,
but it was no go with Jackie .. .
he likes the ground only.

IT WAS THE annual Yom Kip-
pur night festivities honoring
Morris Schwartz' 65th birthday,
and as every year the Schwartz
house was packed with rela-
tives and friends at the candle
blowing out ceremonies . . . Eve-
lyn Brant came alone because
hubby Louis was tired and want-
ed to get some sleep . . How-
ever, one of the other wives at
the Shindig didn't think it was
right and called him up to tell
him so . . . It got results, and
Lou, practical joker, that he is
anyway, decided to come over .
in his pajamas and robe! ... Be-
fore arriving, he had gone to the
wrong house on Monica, where
people thought a mad man was
on the loose! At the Schwartz
abode, folks arriving who didn't
know Lou thought they were at
the wrong house themselves! .. .
Others took a double glance,
thinking he was ill , .. Anyway,
the novelty soon. wore off and
Lou had to keep to himself in
one of the back rooms for the
rest of the evening instead of
prancing about in his pajamas
and robe ... It was a gay num-
ber 65 for Morris Schwartz . . .
but if the amount of celebrants
gets any larger, he and his wife
Dora, will have to start renting
a hall come Yom Kippur night!

Seven heavens cannot contain
Thee;
Thou alone sustaineth them,
But they never can sustain Thee.
Since the day of their creation
Thou alone didst maintain them

But Thou alone, oh Lord, wilt
