Final Payment on 860,000 Israel Clinic j American Savings Barnett Janner Says Aid to UJA
Opens on East Side Is Major• Obligation in Moroccan Crisis
Planned by Local Furniture Dealers

Almost two years ago to the
day, a number of local furniture
dealers, learning of the urgent
need for a hospital at Rishon
L'Zion, Israel, began a drive
among themselves and under
sponsorship of the Israel Hista-
drut Campaign for the now fa-
miliar Detroit Furniture Men's
Clinic in Israel.
Funds raised by the group in
1954 and 1955 were turned over
intact to the Kupat Holim, His-
tadrut medical arm, to cover con-
struction of the $60,000 building.
Early this summer, the hospital
opened its doors, and is presently
serving 12,000 citizens of Rishon
L'Zion and! surrounding commu-
nities.
Strictly functional in design,
with no fancy frills, the 22-
room structure went into op-
eration before the plaster on
the walls had thoroughly dried.
According to Kupat Holim of-
ficials., however, who" submitted
a report to Nathan Shecter, local
chairman, the hospital still lacks
diagnostic and therapetitic equip-
ment which have become stand-
ard in modern medical - practice.
Seeking fulfillment of their
three-year commitment to raise
the entire $60,000 pledge, the
local furniture dealers will
launch the final phase of the ef-
fort at a social evening on Oct.
19, in. the home- of Mr. and Mrs.
Aaron Berg, 12928 Nadine, Hunt-
ington Woods.
All contributors are being is
sued invitations to attend the
program, to hear accounts of the
opening ceremonies and to auto-
graph a bronze plaque which will
be mounted at th,e clinic's en-
trance.

Pioneer Women Set
Jubilee Luncheon

The Detroit Council of Pioneer
Women this year is celebrating
30 years of organizational work
devoted to the well-being of Wom-
en and children as builders of the
state of Israel.
To inaugurate a program of
activities in honor of the anni-
versary, a 30th Year Jubilee
Luncheon will be held Oct. 19,
at Masonic Temple, under the
chairmanship of Mrs. Harry Kay.
Vivian Goldstein, young dra-
matist from Chicago who has
been enthusiastically received by
previous Detroit audiences, will
headline the program.
Flinds raised at the luncheon
are sent to Israel where Moatzot
Hapoalot, the sister organization
of Pioneer Women in the Jewish
state, translates the money into
its many-facted 'program of up-
building the nation's economy.
Mrs. Saul Rose, local Moatzot
Hapoalot chairman, is assisted by
Mesdames Bernard Levin, S.
Stahefsky, Emmanuel • Bauman,
Nelson Deinbs, Philip Field, Sol
Granadier, Leo Green, James
Brindze, Leo - Baum, Ralph Levin,
Abe Feinberg, Norinan Kanter,
Martin- Kaber, Abraham Primack,
Alvin Gale and Miss _Sonja Sas-
love.

Barnett Janner, member of the
British House of Commons, in
an address here to a group of
Allied Jewish _Campaign leaders,
Tuesday evening, at the hoine of
Judge and Mrs. Theodore - Levin,
his hosts during his brief De-
troit visit, expressed grave an-
xiety over the status of Moroc-
can Jewry.

Describing the plight of
North African Jewry, Mr. Jan-
ner said that the decision of the
Zionist Actions Committee, in
Jerusalem, a few weeks ago,
represents fulfillment of a mini-
mal obligation—at a sacrifice
for Israel, whose economic con-
ditions make it difficult for the
country to accept large numbers
of immigrants. But in the event

of an emergency, then it will be
necessary to repeat the efforts
of the past. of receiving very
large numbers of newcomers.
Mr. Janner said there is only
one sure solution to the :serious
problem that faces Jewry; in its
resale efforts: to strengthen the
hands of the United Jewish Ap-
peal, to increase contributions to
relief funds and thereby to
assure Israel's ability to continue
to function as the rescuer of the
needy. In that way, he said,
the persecuted will be rescued
and the country will be assisted
materially, and with manpower.
"We must strengthen our-
selves Zionistically," Mr. Janner
said, in an appeal for increased
encouragement" to the Zionist
movement, whose necessity, he
said, is as great as ever today.
