The Jewish Year in Sports

The greatest personal victory
in sports this year came not on
the playing field but in a legal,
battle. We refer to the triumph
of basketball coach Nat Holman
in being reinstated following his
suspension on charges growing
out of the basketball scandals.
Nat, with the support of many
outstanding people who felt he
was being made a scapegoat, was
put back on the job after a hard
battle.
Mr. Basketball was not con-
tent to leave matters as they

were, but took action to get back
some of the salary that he lost
,during his suspension. The most
important thing, however, as far
as concerns those who recognize
Holman's stature as a coach, was
that he was back at his post for
the College of the City of New
York once more.

Spain vs. Israel
The most explosive issue of the
year was the controversy over
Spain's denial of permission for
Israel to participate in the re-
gional Olympic games in Spain.
This involved not only the sports
aspect, but the whole political
picture of relations between Is-
rael and Spain, and relations be-
tween Spain and the rest of the
world.
Spain made no bones about•its
outlook: Israel was being dis-
criminated against because its
government did not have diplo-
matic relations with the Franco
government. In effect, Israel was
told to set up diplomatic rela-
tions, and its athletes could step
on Spanish soil to compete with
athletes from other countries.
It was also understood that the
hand of the Arab governments
was detected in the mess, since
the Arab leaders are loathe to
participate in the same athletic
contests with Israeli sportsmen.
Efforts were undertaken to get
international Olympic officials,
via a rules change, to take steps
to see that this kind of thing is
not permitted to occur again.

For Sid Gordon, outstanding
baseball player, this was a banner
year with a special significance.
It marked Sid's return to the
team with which he won his
fame—the New York Giants. In
a big trade deal, Sid was bought
by the Giants, who considered
him an important asset in what-
ever hopes they had of over-
taking the sizzling Brooklyn
Dodgers.
Sid, who is getting on in base-
ball years, still packs plenty of
punch and ability as a long-ball
hitter. It was only a short time
ago that he was monopolizing the
hitting columns for homers and
runs batted in.
Generally, the baseball season
was not an auspicious one for
Jewish athletes. Al Rosen was
not able to match his skill of
former seasons. Saul Rogovin got
off to a very poor start with his
pitching record. Cal Abrams,
however, became an important
cog in the Baltimore machine,
and his hitting was relied upon
heavily by the team.
Tennis, in which there were
once very few Jewish stars, this
year saw plenty of fast action by
Jewish players in tournaments
taking place in many countries.
Sid Schwartz and Bernard Bart-
zen took a good share of the
limelight. Herb Flam , also got
back into action and showed some
of his old stuff. A new star on
the horizon is Abe Segal of South
Africa, who fought his way into
