Joe Dorfman, laid up with tu-
berculosis in a Veterans Hospital,
hoped that it would be "a good
year." His thoughts raced back
Friday, September 16, 1955
over the past year, and there was
a wisp of a smile on his face as he
remembered the time five of his
buddies and he had gathered in a
corner of the darkened hospital
ward to meet his family — in a
movie.
The film — "The Dorfmans at
Home" had been filmed in Joe's

worker. And as Joe had watched
from his bed the familiar and
cherished scenes he had left be-
hind nearly two years ago he had
the feeling that he was home
again.
Who can appraise the therapy
in a film—or a song, or a party,
or maybe a quiet bedside chat
for a very sick hospitalized vet-
eran—all the things that are the
hallmarks of the VA voluntary
service program?
What is this program in
which volunteers of all creeds
give some 5,000,000 hours of
service to upwards of 500,000
veterans in a year?
If you were one of the 100,000
voluntary service workers in the
veterans hospital morale pro-
gram, like as not your assign-
ment might be making a film,
staging a show, coaching a play,
serving as a disc jockey, conduct-
ing a Hanukah, Christmas or
birthday affair—or maybe run-
ning the ceramics or occupational
therapy workshop for mental
patients.
Thousands are working in this
program under the banner of the
National Jewish Welfare Board's
(JWB) Women's Organization's
Division. They work at jobs rang-
ing from library service to music
therapy, and they are giving
about 35,000 hours of service in
115 VA hospitals all over the
country
The men and women they serve
are indeed inscribed for a good
life (as are the volunteer workers
themselves). In the special calen-
dar of the Jewish women who
serve the patients it is Rosh Ha-
shanah 365 days a year.
Weeks before the approach of
the High Holy Days this year
Jewish voluntary service workers
worked closely with the Jewish
chaplains, planning for holiday
luncheons, break-the-fast dinners,
home hospitality, the little homey
chats at the bedside and the Rosh
Hashanah gifts to the very ill.
While volunteers have been
busy for days mailing stacks
of New Year cards they were
also keeping an eye peeled on
Hanukah and its wonderful
parties and presents — top fa-
vorites throughout the veterans
hospitals with all the patients—
and even laying plans for
Passover.
The dedicated work of the
Jewish women on behalf of vet-
eran patients is a pretty good
guarantee that you will find the
Rosh Hashanah spirit 365 days a
year in any veterans hospital.

Israel continues to make
rapid strides in exporting local
commodities to foreign markets
with the help of investment
capital from the sale of Israel
Bonds. Among the products
being exported are citrus and
other fruits, flour, starch, candy,
cigarettes, drugs, soaps.. phar-
maceuticals, chemicals, cement,
tires, automobiles, radios, re-
frigerators, watches, typewrit-
ers, kitchen utensils, clothes,
shoes and giftware. Shown
above are Israeli fruit packers
loading crates of citrus fruit
abroad a freight train of the
Hadera-Haifa Railway, which
was built with the aid of Israel
Bond dollars. The shipment
will be sent to Haifa for export
to various countries, including
Great Britain, Holland, Bel-
gium ; France, Denmark, Swe-
den, Norway, Switzerland and
Turkey. Since the inception of
the Israel Bond drive in May,
1951, the value of Israel's ex-
ports •has' risen by almost - 160
percent.
