seventh month, Tishri, brings us
Rosh Hashanah, the head or be-
ginning of the year. This happy.
holiday has gathered unto itself a
number of delightful food cus-
toms. The prophet Nehamiah is
said to have introduced a Persian
custom—serving of "something
sweet." Remember his oft-quoted
phrase—"Eat of the fat and drink
the sweet?"
This custom symbolizes human-
ity's desire for a year of fullness
and prosperity for all mankind. In

During the Babylonian days of
our history, another food custom
became associated with this holi-
day. A whole sheeps's head was
served, symbolizing in graphic
manner "the head of the year."
A food custom that is very pop-
ular in our own day is serving
of a "Tzimmes," especially of car-
rots. Many kinds of "Tzimmes"
have been developed, depending
on the country from which the
family comes. Look through your
favorite Jewish cookbook and se-
lect any one—all are traditional
and time-honored Rosh Hashanah
"musts." So, make it of prunes
and rice, or carrots and potatoes
(with sweet potatoes, too) or Na-
hit with rice as is customary in
the Balkan countries, but make
it sweet with honey or sugar, and
a happy healthy, socially useful

of Philadelphia Appeal
PHILADELPHIA (JTA)—Don-
ald B. Hurwitz, executive direc-
tor of the Combined Jewish Ap-
peal and Federation of Jewish
Community Services in Mon-
treal, Canada, has been named
executive director of Philadel-
phia Allied Jewish Appeal and
the Federation of Jewish Chari-
ties.
He succeeds Ephraim R. Gom-
berg, who resigned recently as
head of the Allied Appeal and
Miss Frances N. Harrison, whose
retirement as executive director
of the Federation of Jewish
Charities was announced last
month. He becomes the first
official to hold the combined
post since Dr. Kurt Peiser, who
left Philadelphia in 1949 to ac-
cept a post as executive vice-
president of the University of
Pennsylvania.
