Ordination of Women
Considered by Rabbis
Reconsideration of Judaism's
'historic stand against women
rabbis was asked for by Dr. Bar-
nett R.. Brickner, of Cleveland,
in his presidential address to the
Central Conference of American
Rabbis, at its 66th annual con-
vention at Asbury Park, N.J.
The Reform rabbis referred
the matter to a special commit-
tee which will report back next
year.
Rabbi Brickner 'referred t6 a
recent decision of the- General
Assembly of the Presbyterian
Church which, he said, "broke a
167-year-old tradition by vot-
ing four to one to ordain wom-
en as ministers," and cited the
shortage of rabbis because of the
rapid rise in the number of Re-
form temples. Congregations af-
filiated with the Union of Amer-
ican Hebrew Congregations, cen-
tral body of Reform, now total-
ling, over 500 templeS, have dou-
bled within the last decade.
Dr. Brickner also urged his
fellow rabbis to support the
United Nations, help combat the
racial character of American im-
migration laws, and join in ef-
forts to secure peace in the Mid-
dle East.
Speaking of Israel's efforts to-
wards peace in the Middle East,
Dr. Brickner referred to Ameri-
can policy as one "which has not
been completely understandable
to a beleaguered and belabored
Israel." "Now is the time," Dr.
Brickner said, "when Mr. Dulles
tells us that the entire American
policy vis-a-vis Israel is under-
going a revision, for us to heart-
ily' endorse a concrete expression
of friendship through a formal
treaty, which will link Israel and
America in a great and common
purpose—the defense of free
democracy."
Dr. Brickner expressed the
hope that President Eisenhow-
er's recent 10 recommendations
for changes in the McCarran-
Walter Immigration -Act would
Walter
i lead to a substantial revision of
the entire immigration program.
Rabbi Brickner was re-elected
to the presidency of the Confer-
ence.
