In a statement addressed to
William Cohen, John W. Martin,
Michigan Republican campaign
chairman and former Auditor
General, gives assurances that
strong support will be given in
this state by the Republican
members of the Legislature to
proposed "legislation outlawing
discrimination based on race,
creed or color."
To support his encouragement
to backers of fair practices
legislation, Mr. Martin, pointing
to the advocacy by Michigan
Republicans of fair practices
measures and their condemna-
tion of racial discrimination,
quotes the following plank from
the Michigan Republican Party
platform unanimously adopted
at the last convention:
"We ap prove and commend
President Eisenhower and those
associated in his administration
who, after Democrat Party lip
service as well as actual opposi-
tion by many Democratic Party
members, have finally broken
down the barriers of racial seg-
regation among the citizens of
our country. We recommend
that this vitally basic principle
of the equality of mankind, be
recognized and practiced
throughout our state in the
fields of education, business, in-
dustry, employment and the
profess'ons; and we further rec-
ommend that such vitally basic
principle be implemented and
perpetuated in the State of
Michigan by appropriate legis-
lation, which would clearly pro-
hibit discrimination."
