Danish Christian schoolmaster, Dr. Aage Bertelsen (left), and
his wife, Gerda, who during Nazi occupation of Denmark led an
underground movement which ferried 6,000 Jews to safety in
Sweden, were honored last week by the Synagogue Council of
America, central national Jewish organization representing
Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform rabbinic and lay movements
in America. SCA President, Dr. Norman Salit (right), presented
Mrs. Bertelsen with a Menorah retreived from a Nazi concentra-
tion camp, and Dr. Bertelsen with a complete set of the Soncino
Bible. Consular officials from Denmark, Sweden, and Norway
participated in the ceremonies which paid tribute to "the Scandi-
navian peoples for their gallantry and humanity" in rescuing
thousands of Jews.

The cost of discrimination to
American business and industry
is $30 billion annually, Elmo
Roper warns in a pamphlet issued
by the National Conference of
Christians and Jews.
This extravagance can be
eliminated, declare the high of-
ficials of four major companies
which have adopted and put in-
to practice a policy of non-
discrimination in employment.
Their views comprise the text of
a companion pamphlet spon-
sored by NCCJ.
Roper presents his warning in
an 18-page booklet entitled "The
High. Cost of Discrimination."
On the basis of research con-
ducted over the past 12 years, he
concludes that "any firm which
does not hire on merit alone is
not only guilty of injustice but
woeful extravagance as well."
Decrying the huge loss in bil-
lions to our economy every yea ,...
he says that discrimination in
employment wastes "ten dollars
out of every $75 paycheck on the
phony luxury of indulging in our
prejudices."
Non-discrimination is the only
answer, contends the second
pamphlet, another 18-page
booklet that brings together
under the title "A Fair Chance
for All Americans" essays on
the subject by Frank M. Folsom,
president, Radio Corporation of
America; M. J. Spiegel, board
chairman, Spiegel, Inc., Chicago
mail order house; Ivan I. Willis,
vice-president, Interna t i o n a 1
Harvester Co.; and C. V. Martin,
vice-president and general man-
ager, Carson Pirie Scott & Co., a
Chicago department store.
