Chemicals for Home and Abroad

On Israel's seventh Passover since its recognition as an inde-
pendent state, new areas of economic growth are being developed
with th2., assistance of Israel Bond funds. Many of the chemicals
which were formerly imported, such as the sulphuric acid being
manufactured at one of the plants of Chemicals and Fertilizers,
Ltd., are now made in sufficient quantities to allow for both local
and export purposes.

President replied that there was
only one concession ht thought
he might offer and that was to
give him (Ibn Saud) the six
million Jews in the United
States."
It was pointed out in some
political circles here that U.S.
News and World Report is a
leading anti-New Deal organ
which has frequently printed al-
legations against the Democratic
Administration and Presidents
Roosevelt and Truman.
(Purely Commentary, in The
Jewish News of Nov. 19, 1954,
discussed the Roosevelt-Ibn
Saud angle at length and gave
credence to th.e charge against

FDR.)

Political quarters in Washing-
ton placed little confidence in
charges made by the U.S. News
and World Report, a weekly
magazine published here, that
the version of the Yalta papers
released by the State Depart-
ment had been altered to delete
alleged "slighting remarks"
about Jews by President Roose-
velt.
The publication said that de-
leted as "not pertinent history"
was "a remark made about Jews
by President Roosevelt at a
plenary session of the Yalta
10. The re-
conference on . Feb.
mark came during a discussion
of possible concessions to the
late King Ibn Saud to secure a
desired action from Saudi Ara-
bia. According to the record,
which has been deleted: "The

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
Washington Post and Times-
Herald claimed in an editorial
that the Yalta papers, as releas-
ed, were 'incomplete in that
"several r ef r r en ce s, notably
some r em ark s by President
Roosevelt about the Jews,' ave
been deleted. Unquestionably
these deletions were made with
the best of intentions, to prevent
what was regarded as needless
exacerbation."
"The omiszions,". the paper
said, "like the difference with
the British version, probably
are trivial. But it is hard to see,
in view of the decision to brave
all' the unhappy consequences
of disclosure of 99-plus percent
of the papers at this time, Why
the Administration had to doc-
tor history in these small par-
ticulars. There already has been
too much of this pernicious
practice."

The Manchester Guardian,
in a cable from Washington
commenting on the release of
the Yalta documents, says
that release of some of Prime
Minister Sir Winston Church-
ill's jocular remarks about the
French has "produced the de-
mand in the United States
that the State Department
should nocv release passages
in the Yalta papers in which
Roosevelt, as is widely known,
spoke harshly about the Jew-
ish people. (The papers are in
danger of becoming a grab bag
of ugly gossip," the British
correspondent added.)

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Attorney
General Jacob Javits has can-
celled an address before the New
York State Association for Sup-
ervision and. Curriculum Devel-
opment at the Lake Placid Club
because, "like his predecessor
Attorney General Nathaniel
Goldstein, he won't set foot in a
hotel which bars . Jews as guests,"
according to the New York Post
Post columnist Barry Gray.
Mr. Davit's office would neither
confirm nor deny Gray's report.
According to Gray, the Lake
Placid Club circumvents this
state's anti-discrimination stat-
utes by being officially listed as
a "club," but relaxes its discrim-
inatory rule "during the off-
season when it is desperate for
income and seeks the business
of convention groups like ASCD."
