Tears Can. Cure

Hair Fashions by Betti Robbins

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

(Copyright 1955, Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, Inc.)

The New York Times carried
a story that two scientists in
California, Doctors Lobstein and
Dulkin, have folind that tears
contains a substance which
shows "some experimental hope
as a weapon against cancer."
Tiny amounts of the sub-
stance extracted from tears,
says the Times, "injected direct-
ly into mice, cause some of the
malignancies to disappear 'en-
tirely and prolong the lives of
the animals."
It may be the time will come
when people will be asked to
donate their tears to a Red
Cross Bank.
A little reflection will show
that there are some good things
to be said for crying. Crying is
a wonderful vocal exercise. If
you want your child to be a
Caruso, I suppose .it is better
than cough drops. I can imagine
too that crying might help
psychologically to produce the
self-confident child. A child
that cries a lot generally wins
his point, and that is conducive
to building self-confidence.
Notwithstanding all of these
more or less obvious facts, cry-
ing is generally in great dis-
esteem. Even in literature, the
term "tear jerker" is an insult.
But if people like the -type of
writing that brings out the tears
in them, there must be some
good in it. And how they like
the "tear jerker."
Years ago there was a writer,
Abraham Shomer, who wrote
for the Yiddish Tageblatt. How
he could evoke the tears! The
old Jewish mothers used to wait
for t h e installments as one
waits for his pay check. The
water used to flow from their
eyes as from faucets. How they
enjoyed the weeping! Life
about them was full of hard-
ships and the cry that he gave
them was as refreshing as a
spring shower. Of course, it may
be that they were helped in the
weeping by the onions they put
in the gefilte fish:
The Tageblatt itself didn't
know how popular these Shomer
stories were until one time when
the author allowed the villain to
go unscathed, hundreds of let-
ters of protests came in, sub-
scriptions were cancelled.
The editor asked Shomer to
bring the piece to an end and
start a new story with right-
eousness triumphant . . .
"How can I," objected Shorn-
er,'"there are 41 characters still
undisposed of."
But Shomer found a way. He
led all the 41 characters into
one room; a fire was started,
and all 41 were burned to cin-
ders. Just like that!
We seem to be ashamed of
such -a show of emotion today.
We don't want to be called sen-
timental. But why not? Is it
better, I ask, that we should
read horror stories? The senti-
mental days didn't produce the
juvenile delinquency of today.
What is wrong about evoking
the feelings of compassion and
tenderness within ourselves?
Is not all prayer a form of
crying? •
"By the waters of Babylon,
they sat down and wept—when
they remembered Zion."
Had our forefathers not wept,
Zion would not have been re-
stored!

JDC Honors Asch

TEL A V I V, (JTA)—Sholem
Asch, noted Jewish author, was
honored as a founder of the
Joint Distribution Committee at
a ceremony at a Malben institu-
tion at Nathanya. Present at
the ceremony were many prom-
inent persons, including Moses
W. Beckelman, JDC's European
director.
Mr. Asch was presented with
a citation, one of 18 awarded to
founders of the JDC which this
year marks its 40th anniversary.
Since Mr. Asch was not in the
United States when the citations
were given the other founders,
this ceremony was held at a
Malben home supported by JDC.
