Despite Report of Late Spring,
Winter Hibernation Ends Early
By the Oak-WOodser
Traditionally, comes Feb. 2
and we wait with bated breath
to see whether the little ground
hog will come out of his hovel,
or whatever it is that little
ground hogs come out of : and
take a look around.
.We have learned, contrary to
all logic, that if the sun is shin-
ing brightly and the ground hog
sees his shadow he's frightened
back to his winter home, and, as
a consequence, we must face the
thought that another six weeks
of .winter are instore for us.
If, on the other hand, the day !
is cloudy, snowy or • generally
miserable, the ground hog will'
not see his shadow, indicating,
of..-course,T an early spring.
This winter, as you will cer-
tainly remember if you are a
follower of ground hog lore, the
little fellow saw his -- shadow.
Here, the sun shone only spas-
modically.
But dOwn in Quarryville,
Pa., on the slumbering banks
of Octoraro Creek, where they
take their ground hogs quite
seriously, the little fellow made
only a momentary appearance
before he scurried back home
for 40 more winks.
Being the trusting type, who
never would seriously doubt the
integrity of a ground - hog, we.
were convinced that we could
put . off thinking about spring
rehabilitation around the house
for at least another six weeks.
Fortified with a good book (on
the mating habits of the ground
hog) we stretched out on the
couch to relax, When there came
a plaintive note from afar. When
it repeated itself, we decided it
came from the basement, and
we went to investigate.
There to our complete amaze-
ment was a women whom we
hadn't seen since last summer.
Outfitted in gardening clothes,
complete with denims and a
sweater, a cap and gloves with
the green thumbs, was our little
missus.
Before her were some green-
looking things which looked
strangely like plants. Upon close
scrutiny we determined they
were plants indeed. Our little
missus was turning the base-
ment into a blooming green-
house.
She, too, it would appear
•
had taken stock of the ground
hog's admonition of a late
spring, but her approach to
the problem was different.
While we were content • to
wait patiently, she was willing
to take the plant by the thorn
and do something about it.
We commended her for her
industry and brilliance in pre-
paring her little flowers ahead
of time for spring planting, and
started to beat a hasty retreat
back to the reality of winter.
Then came the voice that sank
a thousand ships, "Come back
here, you! I've got some work
you can do for me. I need some
more flats for my plants, and
you can start by sawing- some
wood."
And so, while our faith re-
mains firm in the weathermanic
abilities of the little ground hog,
we never again will place much
stock in his prediction of a late
spring.

PURIM SHALACH MONOS
A Gift to the Jewish National Fund
We call upon you, once more, to assist our tradi-
tional Purim activities on behalf of the Jewish National
Fund, Monday night and Tuesday.
The spirit of this joyous holiday which has been,
throughout our history, the enobling symbol of giving
"Mishloach Monos" — Purim gifts — and in recent
decades has been dedicated to the Keren Kayemeth, as-
sumes even greater significance this year.
The Jewish National Fund has been of inestimable
value in the great process of transplantation froM the
lands of dispersion to the Jewish homeland. It has added
millions of dunams of land to the possess . ron of the
Jewish people in Israel. It has cultivated the soil;
planted trees, terraced the mountainsides; irrigated the
desert; drained the swamps. It has restored the land
without a people to the-people without a land. But,much
more remains to be done in Israel.
The following Congregations will be addressed in
