The Jewish Community Council of Detroit, in a statement
issued this week, aligned itself with those who have protested
against the appearance here of van Karajan as the director of
the Berlin Philharmonic and called upon the State Department to
revoke his visa.
The Council calls the selection of van Karajan, an avowed
Nazi since 1933, as unwise and as devoid of the purposes his visit
could have served under the original intentions of our Govern-
ment to encourage the exchange of cultural values among demo-
cratic nations.
