Canadian Players
Here Feb. 5: Wide
Interest' I Shown

The Canadian Players' pre-
sentation of Bernard Shaw's
"Saint Joan", corning to the
Masonic Auditorium this Satur-
day night, features a husband
and wife team as key operators.
Husband Douglas Campbell di-
rects the platform version of the
Shaw show, while his wife, Ann
Casson, plays the leading role
Of Joan, the Maid of Orleans.
The presentation of the play
is a concentrated version, with-
out scenery or costumes, focus-
sing attention on the drama and
the acting calibre of the produc-
tion.
Both husband and wife have
worked together on the stage in
Britain before Campbell came
to Canada to play leading roles
in the Stratford Shakespearean
Festival productions in 1953-'54.
Described as "workman-like",
the platform presentation of
"Saint Joan" makes use of
simple sound and lighting equip-
ment, and, according to Camp-
bell. this type of production
"places the . emphasis on the
actors and drama rather than
on external trappings."
The title role in "Saint Joan"
is being played by Ann Casson,
wife of Douglas Campbell and
daughter of leading British ac-
tress, Dame Sibyl Thorndyke.
Miss Casson even succeeded in
pleasing the playwright G.B.S.,
who said:
"You are exactly the right
humor for it; for Joan is a vol-
cano of energy from beginning
to end, and never the snivelling
Cinderella; born to be burnt,
that all the others except he
first (i.e. Dame Sibyl Thorndyke)
made her."
The Players' production of
'Saint Joan" is being sponsored
here by Sol Krim, prominent
Detroit theater manager and
producer.
Tickets for this one-time per-
formance here are available to=
day at Grinnell's and tomorrow
*.t the Masonic Temple.
