Sociologists Find-U.S. Jews Wish
To Retain Their Jewish Identity
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Ameri-
ca Jews "overwhelmingly" wish
to retain their Jewish identity.
This desire is so great that it
constitutes a strong obstacle to
either assimilation or intermar-
riage. At the same time, native-
born Jews display a marked rise
of interest in their religion.
These were some of the find-
ings of research projects made
public by a group of social sci-
entists at the two-da? Tercen-
tenary Conference on American
Jewish Sociology at Hotel Com-
modore.
More than 250 educators, so-
ciologists, social workers and
communal leaders participated
in the two - day parley. The
meeting was sponsored by the
Conference on Jewish Relations,
an organization which seeks to
promote, by means of scientific
study and research, a better
understanding of the position of
the Jews in the modern world.
Other trends - disclosed were:
1. Increased interest in the
Jewish religion goes hand in
hand with the degree of Amer-
icanization. Jews tend to ob-
serve those religious customs
and ceremonies which are in
line and acceptable to Ameri-
can standards.
2. The great majority of
Jews have a favorable attitude
toward, Israel. However, they
have little, if any, desire to
live there.
3. Jews are continuing their
traditional practice of sup-
porting philanthropies, c o n -

tributing liberally to both Jew-
ish and non-sectarian causes.
In a panel discussion on the
structure of the American Jew-
ish community, the sociologists
stated that the chief develop-
ment was the rise of a new
group of persons who had as-
sumed the leadership of organ-
ized Jewish life in the United
States. A second important
change was the growth and ris-
ing influence of central phil-
anthropic organizations in local
communities.
This was followed by increased
rank and file participation in
Jewish religious and charitable
causes. And finally, they noted,
"the restriction of immigration
has transformed American Jew-
ry into a community overwhelm-
ingly native born, with great
uniformity in Jewish cultural,
religious and folk practices."
Professor John P. Dean of Cor-
nell University reported that
Jews, in medium size American
communities, were the objects
of:
1. Restrictive practices in
"high society," even though
Jews may be leaders in the
economic, political and social
service life of the community.
2. Discrimination
occurs
more frequently in cities
where Jewish participation in
community life is high. The
larger the city and the larger
the proportion of Jews in the
community, the more Jews are
excluded from socially elite or-
ganizations a n d residential
areas.
3. While Jews participate in
politics they h o 1 d relatively
fewer public offices compared to
other minority groups such as
the Irish and Italians.
4. Members of the Jewish
community participate in most
aspects of community life and a
substantial portion of them be-
long to at least one organization
that is predominantly Gentile.
5. Avoidance techniques have
been developed by the Jews to
protect themselves against so-
cial rebuffs of anti-Semitism.
Dr. Salo W. Baron, president
of the Conference on Jewish
Relations, noted that one of the
American Jewish community's
shortcomings was its failure to
support adequately basic re-
search on its own structure and
functions.

Will there ever be a Jewish
president? Will World War III
ever' come to pass? Will Saudi
Arabia recognize Israel? Will
Jewish country clubs increase
or decrease?
These are a few of the "twenty
questions" recently put to 400
Jewish leaders, mostly Reform
rabbis, who were asked to try
their hand at predicting the fu-
ture during these days when the
three hundredth anniversary of
Jewish settlement in the United
States is being celebrated.
One hundred responses to the
questionnaire are reported on in
the current issue. of "American
Judaism," the quarterly periodic-

165,000 families affiliated with
temples belonging to the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega-

A JEWISH PRESIDENT? Of
the hundred replies, some of
them from Conservative rabbis
and laymen active in Jewish life,
five believed that a Jew would
be elected president before the
end of this century. Forty-four
thought it would happen in the
next century. Among comments
evoked by the question were:
"It depends on the man," and
"I doubt whether it will ever
occur because even a basically
unprejudiced majority would
hardly elect a president from a
minority." One respondent said
a Jew would be elected "eight
years after the first Catholic is
elected." Wrote another: "When
an Arab becomes president of
Israel."
