Book Month Inseparably
Linked with Jewish Education
Editor, The Jewish News:
One of the finest innovations
in American Jewish life is the
observance of J e s h Book
Month.
If Jewish Book MOnth is to
have meaning for us, it surely
should be observed not only dur-
ing the particular month known
as Jewish Book Month, but
rather should receive our atten-
tion throughout the year. Tra-
ditionally the Jewish people
have been known as the Am
Hasefer, the people of the book.
As a people, we have constantly
lived. with the written and
printed word. This has been the
propelling force that has made
it possible for us to span the
centuries of time and make our
contribution to history's pages.
We must mobilize all of our
cultural possessions and all of
our cultural heritage in the face
of the assimilation which
threatens to swamp us.
The building of the State of
Israel demands that, more stub-
bornly and energetically than
ever, we continue to forge the
golden chain of Jewi.§h. culture.
That is why this is also the time
for us to remind ourselves of the
fact that the Yiddish and He-
brew languages are also import-
ant links in this chain.
The question of the Jewish
education of our young genera-
tion is one of the most urgent,
and one of the most discussed,
problems in American Jewish
life. It touches upon the very
foundations of the existence of
the Jewish people as such.
Without the next generation of
good Jews, our efforts are in
vain. It is an historic fact • that
our people have survived
throughout long centuries, dis-
persed among other peoples and
in constant touch with other
cultures, in which we have pre-
served our spiritual heritage. A
separatist religious community
life made these efforts relatively
easier in those days than today.
