Chicago Flood Prompts New
Discussions of Rains Here
By the Oak-Woodser
Prompted by the floods this
week in. Chicago, residents of
this area are still talking about
the troubles they hada week ago
Funday, and are hoping that
friends and relatives of theirs in
the Chicago- area have not been •
,affected similarly.
One of the prize stories that '
came to us after the flooded
basements here was that of the
man who stayed .home from'
work Monday to clean up his
basement. He had just fixed up
recreation room costing sever-
al thousands of dollars, a good
portion of which was ruined by
the backed-up water.
Imagine his dismay, when the
doorbell rang and there to greet
him was a salesman—selling as-
phalt tile for a recreation room.
Another rather pathetic hap-
pening was the troubles of a
young lady, who was feted re-

cently at two showers, and had
bundles of valuable presents—
you guessed it--in the basement.
It was a profitable week for
furnace and washing machine
repairmen, a rather dismal one
for many insurance companies
who paid off thousands of dol-
lars in claims.
It was also a busy week rot
the Oak Park Engineering Of-
fice who answered hundreds of
calls to investigate complaints
of faulty construction. Actually,
however, to the credit f the
builders out this way, only one
basement was not according to
code.
The rest were built solidly. It
was just a matter of too much
rain.
The town council meeting was
jammed with people the day af-
ter the storm, and residents
learned that the sewer system is
adequate in taking care of all
but severe storms. Plans for the
construction of storm sewers over
the next three to five years to
protect residents against any
sort of downpour were related.
Insurance agents did a thriv-
ing business, and are continuing
to do so, in the aftermath of the
storm, as most people learned
that they were not covered
against floods by their fire in-
surance policies.
A new form of complete cover-
age which would include sewers
backing up was released in Au-
gust, but very few people were
familiar with it, and even in-
surance companies did not know
too much about the policy. Now,
with everyone wanting this po-
licy and personal property float-
ers, insurance agents are get-
ting writer's cramp.

Madison Urges NAAWP
Be Considered Subversive
Harry T. Madison, national
commander of the Jewish War
VeteranS, has "recommended
strongly" to Attorney General
Herbert Brownell, Jr., that the
National Association for the
Advancement of White People,
as well as Other organizations
I which are fomenting discord
and violence, be investigated
with a view to determining
whether they should be placed
on the Attorney General's list of
subversive organizations."
Madison charged that the
NAAWP "seems to be advocating
principles that are in direct
contradiction to the democratic
spirit and ideals as well as to
the basic tenets of our constitu-
tion declaring equality and free-
' dom regardless of race, creed, or
color."
He charged NAAWP with
"working to undermine the de-
' cision of the Supreme Court per
taining to non-segregation in
the school systems of the tnited
States."
I "This organization," he said,
,'"borrowing the methods of the
' totalitarians, is working to fo-
Iment dissension and violence by
embarking on a campaign of
hate and bigorty designed to set
