Siteruth League Plays Beneficent Role
In Development of Camp Tamarack
In 1944, 30 young married
women banded together to help
underprivileged children. Since
several of these women had been
professionally active i n the
camping movement, it was nat-
ural for them to turn to this in-
stitution as an instrument for
achieving their purpose.
Today, only 10 years after its
founding, the Sheruth League's
efforts are culminating in the
establishment of Sheruth Lodge
at Camp Tamarack to be dedi-
cated Aug. 25.
The League has contributed
$35,000 towards the construction
of' this Lodge and plans to pro-
vide the funds for the five cabins
which will ultimately make up
"Sheruth Village." •
Camp Tamarack is part of the
community's over-all camping
program which will ultimately
serve all age groups on a year-
round basis. The 700-acre site
was purchased by the Jewish
Welfare Federation and money
for the construction of the camp
itself is being provided by the
Allied Jewish Campaign, and
contributions by interested in-
dividuals.
On Aug. 25 there also will be
dedicated the Helen L. DeRoy
Village and the Herman Golanty
Cabin.
Serving more than 400 chil-
dren this summer, the camp, to-
gether with Fresh Air Camp
near Brighton, provides vaca-

summer. In order to provide
camperships for those children
who cannot pay the full rate,
additional funds are provided by
the United Community Services
and the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion, as well as contributions
from individuals and organiza-
tions.
Here, too, Sheruth League has
for many years made notable
contributions. In addition to its
capital gift for the Lodge, the
League has annually provided
camperships for needy children.
Beginning in 1946 with five, the
League provided in 1954 the
funds that enabled 56 children
to attend for a total of 248
weeks of camping.
Mrs. William Gelb, president
of Sheruth League, points out
that each child attending camp
under their auspices also is pro-
vided with necessary clothing
and equipment. In addition, the
`League has been concerned
with the Jeanne Canvasser Me-1
morial Library and numerous
other civic causes, particularly
those serving children.
The community is invited to
attend the dedication of the new
camp building, on Aug. 25. The
program conducted by the Fresh
Air Society on behalf of the
Tamarack Authority will begin
at 2 p.m. Details of the program
