Spread of Anti-Semitism: Now It Is Argentina

- From time to time; we face evidence. of
the spread of • a new type of anti-Semitism.
Hatred of Jews originally was based on re-
ligibus themes .and the unfortunate spread of
the crucifixion libel. Later it was giVen a
racial aspect. It was always associated with
financial and industrial problems and with
stupid charges that Jews controlled the
mpney market, that they dominated the press .
and commerce, etc.
In recent years, pro-Arab propaganda has
accounted for much of the inspired anti-
Jewish prejudice. It is in evidence in this
country, the offices of members of Congress
being flooded with anti-Semitic literature.
Now we have word of the spread of anti-
Semitism in. Argentina.
Buenos Aires, according to a report in
the New York Times from its Argentine cor-
respondent, Edward A. Morrow, has become
a disturbing center of a network of anti-
Semitic propaganda. As a result, the Argen-
tinian capital's leaders of the 400,000 Jewish
residents are planning to present the problem
to President Juan D. Peron. The Buenos
Aires Israelite World has called attention, in
an editorial entitled "Nazi Focal Points in
Buenos Aires," to the fact that Argentina
recognized Israel more than five years ago
and that the Argentinian Jews have been as-
sured time and again by General Peron him-*
self of the non-racial. aspects of his regime.
The newspaper --then poses the question
whether the Jewish population can long re-
main silent in the face of the growing anti-
Semitism. According to N.Y. Times corre-
spondent Morrow: - .

In the last fortnight there has been a sharp
increase in racist propaganda directed against
the Jews-and the State- of Israel. Several news-
papers have published frankly anti-Semitic
advertisements placed by a heretofore un.-
_known organization, La Association Cultural
Siria (Syrian Cultural Association). Attempts
to find its headquarters haVe been fruitless.

"Seizing upon a news agency's story about
a United Nations report that dealt with slavery
said to have been practiced by a Syrian tribe,
the association said the attack was a result of
the "machinations of world Jewry." Although -
the report was distributed by the Italian news
agency Ansa, the association professed to be-
lieve that publication was a result of the efforts
of Jews who wanted to disparage the Arab
world.

•A two-column advertisement included a
lengthy comparison of the citizenship quality
of Jews with those of Arabs. It accused the
Jews of abusing the hospitality of any country
permitting their entry.

The Israelite World cited two publications
with circulation throughout South America:
The German-language monthly Der Weg,
which consistently refers to, the West German
Chancellor as "Grand Rabbi Adenauer" and

Nazareth's Mayor

Nazareth's new Mayor, Amin Jarjura, is
a moderate. This Arab leader is 60 years
old, he is Greek Orthodox, a lawyer, served
as a magistrate under British rule and ac-
cording to an eminent correspondent is
known for his "loyalty to Israel."
Jarjura's election is of special importance
because the Israeli city which has so much
significance in Christian lore has elected a
member of Mapai and has defeated the Com-
munist candidate. Nazareth, in spite of its
religious character, has been the center of
Communist . activities in the Jewish State
where the overwhelming number of , Com-
munists is composed of Arabs.
The decline of Communist strength in
Nazareth is a good indication. It is expected
that the anti-Communist attitude of the new
Mayor will tend to give a further blow to
Communism in Israel. Jarjura's election is
one of the brightest things that has happened
in Israel.

which is barred from West Germany, and the
Spanish-language weekly America and the
Levant, edited by a former secretary of the
Egyptian Embassy, which Jewish leaders said
they suspect of being financed by the Arab
League. This publication often concerns it-
self with "international Jewry" and "Jewish
communism." In a recent article on Senator
Joseph R. McCarthy, it said the greater part
