LONDON, (JTA) — Robert N.
Carvalho was elected president
of the Anglo-Jewish Association
to succeed Ewen Montagu who
resigned the post to accept the
presidency, of the United Syna-
gogue. Mr. Carvalho's hornina-
Con was supported by British
Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie. -
In his presidential • address,
Carvaiho declared that the AJA
was a "voluntary association of
men and women who are con-
scious of our dual heritage as
Jews and as Englishmen, and
who are determined to maintain
that heritage and pass it on to
the generations to come."
Carvalho called for an end to
Internal bickering within the
Jewish community, and pledged
to try to cooperate with other
Jewish leaders and organizations
On a "live and let jive basis."
But, he stressed, this -did not
mean that he advocated that
'people agree to dishonorable
compromises" or the sacrifice of
principles by way of. appease-
ment. He also touched upon the
close links between the AJA
And. Jews in Israel and other
coun tries.

At a brunch meeting, at the
home of Mrs. Joshua Sperka, a
campaign was mapped by the
Women's Sabbath League to
intensify the work of sabbath
observance among the Jewish
women in the community.
A plan was formulated to en-
list all synagogue sisterhoods to
sponsor sabbath Mevorchim, the
sabbath of the blessihg of the
new month as "Womens Day"
at the synagogue. It is a tradi-
tion that women who could not
attend the synagogue on other
sabbaths would make every ef-
fort to attend on this sa,bbath.
Sisterhoods are being asked
to sponsor a special kiddush in
honor of women attending on
sabbath Mevorchim and make
it known as "Womens Sabbath"
in the synagogue.
An essay and oratorical- con-
test is being planned to , culmi-
nate late in the school season
next year. among students of
the various Hebrew and religious
schools on the importance of
the Sabbath.
The League still requests that
Women refrain from shopping on
the sabbath, and patronize
those. merchants closed on the'
sabbath in order to aid them
to keep their establishments
