Observant Jewish students
attending Wayne University
will be excused from taking
their final examinations on
Shevuot. June 7 and 8. These
students will be permitted to
take their examinations on
different days.
Permission for this was ar-
ranged with the University by
Rabbi Max Kapustin, director
of the Bnai Brith Hillel Foun-
dation at Wayne. member of
the executive committee and
co-chairman of the internal
relations committee of the
Jewish Community Council.
This arrangement is in ac-
cord with the established
Council position in suggesting
alternative dates in instances
where dates for such occa-
sions as elections and exami-
nations coincide with the
'Jewish Sabbath or religious
holidays.
The subcommittee on ad-
missions, .records and regis-
tration of Wayne University
recommends that Jewish stu-
dents affected should request
an examination on another
day, and that it will be at as
favorable a time as can be
arranged. Such requests by
students must be made as
early as possible before the
examination period.

Four Years Hebrew School
Required for Bar Mitzvah

The United Hebrew Schools
have made known - the re-
quirements for Bar Mitzvah es-
tablished by Conservative syna-
gogues, establishing uniform
standards.
The Conservative synagogues
two years ago established the re-
quirement of a minimum of four
years attendance at an accre-
dited week-day afternoon He-
brew School prior to the Bar
Mitzvah. -
These requirements were
adopted by the Congregations
Adas Shalom, Bnai Moshe, Beth
Aaron and Shaarey Zedek, in
cooperation with the United He- 1
brew Schools.

Lawrence Thompson's "A Time
to Laugh," published by Julian
Messner (8 W. 40th, N.Y. 18) is
a delightfully comic story about
the Buna Service Corps and the
enlistment of the son of Chief
Abu Butan Gadein. The incom-
petence of Gadein, the magic
which drew him out of his un-
complaining silence, the tempers
of the natives — these combine
to add to the humor and to the
narrative of the well-written

book.
