Mayor Asked to Name
Commission Directors

A statement adopted by the
Jewish Community Council
urged immediate action on the
part of Mayor Albert E. Cobo
and the City of Detroit Commis-
sion on Community Relations in
appointing an executive direc-
tor for the Commission.
The Council. statement point-
ed out that the Commission on
Community Relations has been
without permanent professional
leadership since its creation in
May 1953. The statement com-
mended the outstanding work
achieved by its predecessor
body, the City of Detroit Mayor's
Interracial Committee, and re-
gretted that since the departure
of George Schermer, the direc-
tor of that body, no successor
has been chosen.
The Council expressed aston-
ishment at the statement at-
tributed to the Mayor limiting
the selection of a director to a
resident of Detroit and minimiz-
ing the need for professional
qualifications. These criteria,
the Council stated, would have
to be regarded as "hindering
rather than helping the selec-
tion of a qualified director."
