Dear Boys and Girls:
This week, I am introducing
you to another great Jewish
leader of the past century, Dr.
Judah Leib Pinsker, in a brief
biographical note.
I am also presenting to you a
concise explanation of kashruth
—the term that is used for the
Jewish dietary laws.
Once again, I'd like to invite
all of you to write for this col-
umn—poems, short stories, what-
ever you may choose. Material
worth printing will be included
in forthcoming columns.
A happy Sabbath to all of
you.

Dr. Judah Leib Pinsker
Dr. Judah ,Leib Pinsker, au-
thor of "Autoemancipation" and
first president of the Association
for the Settling of Jews in Pal-
estine, was born in 1823. He died
in 1891.
He was a famous physician,
writer and public man. Born in
Tarmoshov, Poland, he later re-
sided in Odessa, where he died.
He received a Hebrew and sec-
ular education and was brought
up in a Jewish atmosphere. He
studied law and medicine in uni-
versities in Russia and abroad,
in the sixties of the Nineteenth
century, he wrote essays in Rus-
sian and other languages; on
Jewish subjects, and defended
"Haskalah," — enlightenment —
advising assimilation with Rus-
sian culture. - He was a mem-
ber of the editorial staff of the
periodical "Zion" and a member
of the committee for dissemina-
tion of knowledge among Jews.
At the close of the seventies
of the last century, he aban-
doned the ideas of assimilation
and became an ardent nation-
alist. Since then he worked in
that direction, and in 1881

Laws of Kashruth
and Family
Rabbi Michael Alper, in a book
"The Bible Retold," describes the
laws of Kashruth, the Jewish
dietary laws, as follows:
You surely have seen the He-
brew word, Kosher, on Jewish
butcher shops and restaurants.
Do you know the meaning of
that word?
Kosher means "fit." The word
tells us that the meat and other
food sold in the store is fit to be
eaten by every Jew. who ob-
serves the Jewish dietary laws,
and laws concerning food.
For thousands of years the
Jewish people have been eating
only those foods which the Jew-
ish laws would permit them. As
a _result, the Jews today are
strong and vigorous in body,
and are admitted by other races
for their ability to live to a
ripe old age.

strike Tuesday as the govern-

measures to end the walkout
which was called because the
employees had not yet been paid
for October.
The strike resulted from the
fact that the city treasury is
empty and the municipal ad-
ministration_ has been unable to
raise the funds necessary to keep
all city functions operating. Al-
though a cabinet committee has
been studying a number of plans
for a municipal overhaul, the
government is aware that no
permanent improvement is pos-
sible without a large increase in
the city's income.
