I am also presenting to you a concise explanation of kashruth —the term that is used for the Jewish dietary laws. A happy Sabbath to all of you. * * * Dr. Judah Leib Pinsker Dr. Judah ,Leib Pinsker, au- thor of "Autoemancipation" and first president of the Association for the Settling of Jews in Pal- estine, was born in 1823. He died in 1891. He was a famous physician, writer and public man. Born in Tarmoshov, Poland, he later re- sided in Odessa, where he died. He received a Hebrew and sec- ular education and was brought up in a Jewish atmosphere. He studied law and medicine in uni- versities in Russia and abroad, in the sixties of the Nineteenth century, he wrote essays in Rus- sian and other languages; on Jewish subjects, and defended "Haskalah," — enlightenment — advising assimilation with Rus- sian culture. - He was a mem- ber of the editorial staff of the periodical "Zion" and a member of the committee for dissemina- tion of knowledge among Jews. At the close of the seventies of the last century, he aban- doned the ideas of assimilation and became an ardent nation- alist.
