Another year has just begun,
Today starts '54,
And time to look ahead again
Instead of days before.
We pray to God for all good
health,
With happiness and cheer,
As on this day we wish you all
A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR

THOSE OF YOU who saw last
week's TV presentation of "This
Is Your Life" honoring Eddie
Cantor, will agree that a half-
hour could never do justice to
the long and brilliant life and
career that Eddie has enjoyed
.. and will readily sympathize
with M. C. Ralph Edwards in
trying to bunch as much as pos-
sible into so limited a time .. .
"The Eddie Cantor Story" movie,
now being shown at the Para-
mount Theater in New York, is
even more minute in its detail
of Eddie's life because of the
picture time limitation, but
makes a valiant effort to bring
out much of the highlights in a
career that is probably one of
the greatest in show business

LOCAL BARRISTER, J. Leon-
ard Hyman, tells of the long-
winded lawyer friend in the
community who droned on and
on and on until the judge finally
gave vent to a suggestive yawn
. . "I sincerely trust," said the
lawyer, "that I am not trespass-
ing on the time of the court."
. . ."There is some difference,"
the judge observed, "between
trespassing on time and en-
croaching on eternity."

ONE OF THE MOST welcome
contributions received by a can-
cer victim is that of a cancer
pad . . . to help relieve whatever
aches and pains they may have
while absorbing the blood that
may come from a cancerous
wound. . . The Sisterhood of the
Adas Shalom Synagogue has
been making these . pads for the
past four years . . . and have
started again on this most
worthy project . . , with every-
one welcome to participate . . .
Mrs. Jacob Levine is chairman,
assisted by Mrs. David Taylor,
co-chairman . . . For informa-
tion, call LI. 6-9712 and find out
how you, too, can make life a
bit easier for a victim of cancer.

HARRY AARON, boss of the
Triangle Bar on Michigan Ave.,
was buttonholed on the way to
his place of business by a waver-
ing gentleman, exuding the
delicate fragrance of cheap
bourbon, who demanded, "Hey,
where'sh Alcoholics Anony-
moush?" . . "You want to
join?" asked Harry incredulously
"Heck, no," roared the other.
"I want to resign."

Dimes, which begins Jan. 2 and
continues on until Jan. 31, led
by this slogan, "Please Give
More in '54" will again be out
there pitching to fight infan-

to us folks to see to it that the
campaign goes over the top in
funds . . . At a certain cross-

The Joint Distribution Corn-
mittee will provide $1,250,000
during 1954 for the work of ORT
(Organization for Rehabilitation
Through Training), principal
agency of f e r i n g vocational
training to Jews overseas, under
an agreement reached by the
two organizations.
Vocational activities in Europe,
Israel, North Africa and Iran,
which' are covered in the agree-
ment, will cost $2,830,000 during
the coming year. The ORT will
raise the difference between the
amount granted by JDC and the
total sum required.
Under terms of the pact, the
largest single amount for any
one country among the nine-
teen nations in which ORT pro-
grams are conducted is desig-
nated for the ORT schools in
Israel. ORT currently conducts
eighteen training centers and
vocational schools in the Jewish
state, with an annual enroll-
ment of 3,200 students, consti-
tuting the largest system of vo-
cational schools in Israel. Sub-
stantial allocations have also
been assigned to ORT vocation-
al training centers in Moslem
areas and in Europe.

HAIFA, (JTA) — The Haifa
Institute of Technology has
been closed by a student
strike in the form of refusal
to pay increased tuition fees.
Fees were raised by the ad-
ministration when it found
itself unable to cover the
school's budget in the absence
of adequate private contribu-

sidies.
The crisis of the Technion
has been referred to the

Rabbi Solomon Foster, rabbi
emeritus of Congregation Bnai
Jeshurun, Newark, N.J., expresses
in poetry the philosophy of his
spiritual outlook on life. The
title of his book, "Spiritual
Trails to Happiness," is an apt
description for his thoughts on
the variety of subjects on which
he has written the verses. The
book was published by Bookman
Associates, 34 E. 23rd St., New
York 10.
Rabbi Foster's poems are ded-
icated to the heroes in Jewish
Biblical history, to the holidays
and to a score of other subjects,
including the calendar.
The sub-titles explain some
of the interesting subjects in his
book. They are: Assurance of
Divinity, Foundations of Hu-
manity, Sanctity of Personality,
Romance of the C a l e n d a r,
Spirituality of Love, Blessings
of Duty, Inspirations of Memory
and Hope.
In the section on the Calen-
dar he describes the counting
of time, dedicates a poem as a
birthday greeting, and a verse
on the Sabbath, thus:
Of all the clays within the week,
I dearly love but one day,
And that's the day that comes
Between a Friday and a Sunday..
"Spiritual Trails to Happiness"
will undoubtedly inspire many
readers.
