Dr. Teller Attacks
kdministration Handling
Of Near East Crisis

Dr. Judd Teller, in an address
before a record crowd of 2,500
people gathered at the donor af-
fair sponsored by the Detroit
Council of Pioneer Women,
lashed out at the present Ad-
ministration in Washington by
stating its policy is based on un-
informed premises and ill-judged
actions.
Dr. Teller, a former newspa-
perman who now is information
director of the Jewish Agency
and an advisor to the Israeli
Consulate in the United States,
was referring chieflyto the Ad-
ministration's handling of the
current Near East tensions,
which were aroused in the Kibya
incident.
"Major troubles in the Middle
East and disaffections with the
West," Dr. Teller said, "are not
due to Arab-Israel tensions, but
to the clash between indigenous,
nationalistic movements a n d
Britain and France. The troubles
in Egypt, Iran, East and North
Africa cannot be laid at Israel's
doorstep.
"Let the Arabs undertake their
own irrigation. Impeding Is-
rael's project (the Jordan Val-
ley project, which Dr. Teller says
will go through) will not help
Arab development. By taking
Kibya out of context, you do not
solve border tensions, because
the Arabs, not the Jews are re-
sponsible for these tensions."
Dr. Teller stated that the best
way American Jews can help to
relieve wrong impressions which
have been created by the Gov-
ernment in Washington is by ex-
plaining the situation to non-
Jews.
This, he added, has been car-
ried out to a great extent by
American newspapers who are
aware of the background of the
incidents, and in the true sense
of justice and fair play have
cleared Israel of many unjusti-
fied attacks by the Arabs.
In lauding Pioneer Women for
its work in aiding thousands of
immigrants to Israel to become
settled, through the functioning
of the •Moatzot Hapoalot in Is-
rael, Dr. Teller stated that the
organization has taken a burden
off the Israeli government,
which at this time cannot par-
ticipate in such volunteer ef-
forts.
