Editorial Lashes
At Resort Bigotry

An American Jewish Press

"In these days, when an en-
lightened society rebels against
the practice of discrimination, it
must be somewhat of a shock to
find that an organization repre-
senting the interests of an hon-
ored community lends its name
and prestige to a public profes-
sion of bigotry."
This is the start of an editorial
appearing in The Observer,
Memphis, Tenn. - Jewish weekly,
published by Jacques Back,
which goes on to expose the
shameless action of the Virginia
Beach, Va. Chamber of Com-
merce in appealing for mem-
bership lists of "restricted
organizations" for m em be r s
seeking a vacation spot or stop-
overs on business trips.
The request for a listing of
civic clubs was addressed to var-
ious Chambers of Commerce in
the United States, for the "ex-
clusive" Cavalier Club of Vir-
ginia Beach, and stated, "We,
of course, will contact these
clubs in an effort to secure their
membership lists. However, we
would like to know before con-
tacting these clubs whether they
are restricted as to Jewish and
Gentile members."
The editorial concludes, "Only
Gentiles--it is thus shamelessly
stated—are welcome to approach
Virginia Beach. We . . . quite
humbly suggest that the Virginia
Beach Chamber of Commerce
present t h em ( t h e CaValier
Club) with copies of the Scrip-
tures and of that treasured in-
strument, the American Consti-
tution.

Tercentenary Stamp .
May End as a Dream

Latest indications are that
the hope for the issuance of a
special U. S. Postage Stamp
commemorating the 300th anni-
versary of the settlement of the
Jews in the United States may
end in a dream.
This information is contained
in a letter from Albert J. Rob-
ertson, Assistant U. S. Post-
master General, to Philip
Slomovitz, president of the
American Association of Eng-
lish-Jewish New s p a p e r's, re-
sponding to a resolution - adopted
by the English-Jewish publish
ers, at the meeting of th\e . asso
elation's executive committee in
Chicago three weeks ago, urging
the issuance of such a stamp.

Mr. Robertson wrote: .
"We have received a great

many requests for this stamp
but the Postmaster General has
not yet formulated the program
for next year. It is probable,
however, that one may be de-
veloped for a new series of reg-
ular stamps in which case the
number of strictly commemora-
tives will of necessity have to be
greatly reduced because of the
limitations of production. For
this reason we are not able at
this time to give any assurance
of the approval of any special
stamps beyond the very few for
which -commitment has already
been made or which by. prece-
dent should be issued."
