"I went to Jordan steeped in
o Arab exiled
pity for the
from his native Palestine by a
combination of fate and his own ,
action, war and flight," wrote
Mrs. Cornelia James Cannon of
Radcliffe's class of 1899 in the
Radcliffe Quarterly. "But a vis-
it to the refugee camps in Jeri-
cho was a shock, continued
Mrs. Cannon, the widow of a
Harvard professor. "Esoteric
emotion was replaced by a re-
vulsion of feelin.g if not justify-
ing their exile at least freshly
understanding it," she said,

to shelter them in Jericho, who
sat smoking and talking and
lounging in filth, which a "little
work on their part would have
eliminated." The men would
make no move to better their
condition and what little work
had to be done, such as bring-
ing water and fuel to the camp,
was done by women, complained
Mrs. Cannon.
"They have refused any of-

fered solution of their 'problem
save a return to Palestine
whefe, under the hated Jews,
they were better off than they
had ever been under their fel-
low Arab administration," said
Mrs. Cannon.

the Arabs are when there is
land available that needs only
hard work to restore it to pro-

The Arabs' handicap is not
circumstance but character, Mrs.
Cannon pointed out. "They lack
the energy and determination to
tackle a hard task and master
it," she said. Instead of telling
the Arabs to "Work or starve,"
the United Nations practically
say "Rest and eat," and the
Arabs acquiesce, said Mrs. Can-
non.
"Should _the world, because
these people seem unable to help
themselves, force Israel to take
them back and give them the
care and opportunity which their
own kin refuse them? Would we
be so stupid as to ask the Jews
to burden the magnificent work
they are doing for the Jewish
refugees of the centuries in or-
der to provide for dependent
Arabs whom their own brothers
reject?" asks Mr. Cannon.

Arab attack on Israel was in-
spired by the Mohammedan
priestly hierarchy as a prelimin-
ary to a Holy War. She does not
think a resumption of war be-
tween Israel and the Arab na-
tions 'likely for Israel is too well
armed and too alert to the
threat of danger to make it safe
to attack her, and she herself is
too busy developing her country
to attack.
Mrs. Cannon went to Jordan
full of sympathy for the Arabs
but returned to America and
wrote her article impatient of
the Arabs and their complaints
and full of admiration for the
Israelis and their achievements.
