Oysher has always captivated

`MICHELLE' ROSENBERG:

Yiddish Theater Star
To Entertain Yeshiva

The story of Michael Rosenberg as a rising star in the
Yiddish theater coincides with the rise of Schwrtz's Yiddish
Art theater to a place of preeminence occupied by no other
group.
Starting as an extra, Michael Rosenberg, who at that
time was working in a leather store by day and serving his
theater apprenticeship by night, was encouraged by Mr.
Schwartz to leave his "lucrative" daytime work and join the

of The Review wrote, "His ren-
dering of Yiddish folk songs
captivated the entire audience.
Here is no ordinary cantor in
the generally accepted sense of
the term, but a superb artist."

For six generations of the
Oysher family, a male descen-
dant has been a cantor, and the
seventh son back was a rabbi.
It perhaps seems a far 'cry from
that ancestor in Lipkon, •Bessar
L abia to Hollywood where OySher
has appeared in numerous filMs,
but the journey was inevitable.
In Moishe's veins flows the
gift of song, injected there not
so many years ago by his lath.,
er when the two sang together
in • the Romanian synagogue.
But, Moishe also had a lust
for the theater, which he en-
tered at the age of six. with a

troupe of traveling actors.
These two basic longings—the

soul of the synagogue and the
flare for the theater — today
make -Oysher one of the truly
great artists of all time.
