Launching the current observ-
ance of Education Month, the
United Hebrew Schools' commit-
tee for the observance of the
Month has undertaken to con-
tact local organizations with an
appeal to devote an entire pro-
gram or a portion of an evening
dixring October for discussion of
educational needs in this com-
munity,
Walter L. Field, chairman of
this year's Education Month,
presided at a meeting of the
committee Monday night, at the
Rose Sittig Cohen B I d g., at
which it was decided to issue_
the Education Month Call for
deeper concern by the Detroit
•
community in the need for ex-
panding the school system and
of enlarging the educational ac-
tivities.
The Education Month activi-
ties, Mr. Field reports, will in-
clude a special radio program,
arrangements for which a r e
being made by Ruben Isaacs;
special assemblies by the Kvut-
zah Ivrith and its Women's Aux-
iliary, the Women's Auxiliary of
the Schools and the Hebrew
Teachers Association and mes-
sages to congregants in local
congregations.
A forum on Jewish education
is being planned by the alumni
of the schools.
D o r o t h y Sarnoff, versatile
singing-actress, star of the mu-
sical comedy "The King and I,"
will be featured at the "Round
the Clock" Fashion Revue to be
presented by the Israel Bond
Women's Group on Oct. 6 in the
Scottish Rite Cathedral of Ma-
sonic Temple, it was announced
by Mrs. Milton Mahler, program
chairman for the show.
Miss Sarnoff has starred in
such other Broadway produc-
tions as "Rosalinda," "Magda-
lena" and "My Darlin' Aida."
She has appeared at Waldorf-
Astoria and Hotel Pierre, and
has graced TV cameras on such
shows as "The Ford Star Thea-
ter, "T oast of the Town,"
"Celebrity Time," "This Is Show
Business," and "The Arthur
Murray Show."
A 'soloist with majof American
opera companies, she .has con-
certized with New York City
Center Opera Company, Phila-
delphia Opera Company, St.
Louis Municipal Opera, Los An-

ATHENS — The Joint Distri-
bution Committee has an-
nounced the reopening of its
emigration office here to meet
increasing requests from Greek-
Jewish war survivors for re-
settlement assistance.
The JDC office will provide
aid to the 7,000 Greek Jews seek-
ing new homes abroad. With
Funds provided in the U. S.
through the United Jewish Ap-
peal, JDC helps prospective mi-
grants complete the necessary
consular formalites. Approxi-
mately 75 per cent of all Jews
emigrating from Europe are
sponsored by JDC.

A near-legendary figure of
World War II, Dafni was ap-
pointed first Israel Consul to the
seven Western States with the
establishment of Israel in 1948.
He has also served as Chief of
the Press section
of the Israel
Foreign Affairs
Ministry and as
F o r eign Office
member of the
Israel-Arab Ar-
mistice Commis-
sion.
In 1940 Dafni
volunteered for
service in t h e
British Army.
As a lieutenant
in British Intel-

ticipated in the Allied Cam-
paigns of the Western Des-
ert, Greece ; Crete and Syria.
Educated in Vienna, he emi-
grated to Israel in his teens.
