Water Needs for Year 5714
To Be Met with Neu) Pumping Station
The New Year 5714 will fine Israel prepared to meet an in-
creasing proportion of its agricultural needs with this water
pumping station, being built with State of Israel Bond funds near
Bosh rina. The water project is being constructed deep within
the side of a mountain to assure its continued operation in the
event of any contingency. Above, an engineer and several work-
men fill in a wall of the station's main chamber, which will house
three Diesel pumps. When completed, the station will be fully air
conditioned, provide its own electric power, and contain enough
space for a dini ig hall, offices, living quarters, storage compart-
ments and other facilities.

The extreme anti-Semite is
generally an individual who has
a strict upbringing with little
love and affection in his family
and who turns his resentment of
his parents against what he con-
siders a safe target, scien
tific findings published by the
American Jewish Committee re-
veal.
The study was issued in the
form of an 18-page booklet, "Sci-
ence Looks at Anti-Semitism."
Pointing out that the anti-
Semite is usually an "authori-
tarianpersonality,"theAJC
pamphlet reports that "the typ-
ical authoritarian is not only
anti-Semitic, he is also anti-
Negro, anti-foreign and anti-
democratic." `
For the extreme anti-Semite,
the studies show, his prejudice
serves as a "safe" outlet for his
own hostile and aggressive feel-
ings toward others. For the mod-
erate or mild anti-Semite, his
bias enables him -to bolster his
own often weak feelings of self-
esteem by giving him a chance
to put himself in a "superior"
group and others in an "inferior"
category.
The pamphlet stresses the
positive value of legislation as a
way of changing prejudiced be-
havior. "If we are required not
to discriminate in employment,"
the study says, "if institutions
of higher learning must accept
qualified applicants regardless
of religion, if it becomes impos-
sible to restrict communities to
'Gentiles only,' then there is
change in the environment.
"Where once it used to be con-
sidered proper and right that
Jews should not be given cer-
tain jobs, admitted to certain
institutions or allowed to buy
their homes in certain areas, the
opposite will in time become
proper and right.
"Under the changed situation
produced by anti-discrimination
laws, new habits and customs
will have been established. And
if the anti-Semitic person is au-
thoritarian, it will be easier for
him to accept the new situation,
provided that authority stands
strongly behind it."

Libbie L. Braverman is ad-
mirably suited to writing chil-
dren's stories, and her newest
book, "Children of Freedom," is
an especially well chosen work
for young readers.
As a leader in Hadassah in
Cleveland, the region embracing
Ohio and other states and the
national organization; as a
teacher and as director of re-
ligious schools in Cleveland, Mrs.
Braverman has had an oppor-
tunity to learn the reactions of
children to Jewish events. Hav-
ing visited in Israel and having
led Zionist groups, she is well
equipped to relate the facts
about both.
Thus, her "Children of Free-
dom," a Bloch Publishing Co.
product, takes the young reader
through Israel. It tells the boys
and girls about the young state.
The children's tour through Is-
rael introduces them to the land
and its people. It teaches the
young reader about the young
nation's important cities, the
heroes who dreamed and labor-
ed for a redeemed Israel, the
Prophets who foresaw the re-
birth.
It is a story of the United
Nation's action for a Jewish
state. It is a tale about immi-
grants and the centers they
built--Tel Aviv, Rishon, Na-
thanya. It also tells of the
founders of the Zionist move
ment—about Herzl, Hess, Pins-
ker; about the modern leaders
who gave the new state the
name Israel; about the spirit of
'48 which overcame Arab as•
saults; about Weizmann and
Ben-Gurion; about the holidays
in Israel.
Fulfillment of Prophecy, and
quotations from the Scriptures
to prove the inevitable result of
the rebirth of Jewish statehood
enliven this book. It is a good
