Dr. Lowdermilk Given Post as Heal
Of Technion Engineering Department

Dr. WALTER C. LOWDERMILK, outstanding Anierican au-
thority on soil conservation, chats with students at the Haifa
Technion. Dr. Lowdermilk was last week named by the Technion
as director of its new department of agricultural engineering.
The department will teach courses in soil and water conservation,
food control, rural electrification, settlement planning and farm
machinery. Dr. Lowdermilk is best known for a plan named after
him suggesting the creation of the Jordan Valley Authority, sim-
ilar to the TVA in this country.

Of Citizenship of
Editor of Freikeit

NEW YORK, (JT.A)--TThe De-
partment of Justice announced
that it intends to seek the de-
naturalization of Paul Novick,
editor of the Jewish Communist
newspaper "Freiheit" on the
ground that he swore to false
statements when he obtained
United States citizenship in
1927. Mr. Novick immigrated to
this country in 1920. Revoca-
tion of his citizenship will be
sought through the Federal Dis-
trict Court of New York, the
announcement said.

NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
American Jewish Historical So-
ciety will conduct an historical
essay contest to mark the 300th
anniversary of Jewish settlement
in the United State, Dr. Salo W.
Baron, president, announced.
Thee contest is part of the So-
ciety's overall program for the
American Jewish Tercentenary
which aims to stimulate public
interest and academic research
in American Jewish history. The
Tercentenary will be observed
from Sept. 12, 1954 through May,
1955. -
The Society will award three
prizes to winners: $500, first
prize; $300, second prize; and
$200, third prize. The awards
will be made either in cash or
in the form of scholarships at
recognized schools of higher
learning. The contest is open
to university students on the
.. raduate or undergraduate lev-
e Is, both Jews and non-Jews.
Essays submitted are not to
e xceed 10,000 words, must be
ocumented and must not have
b een published, in whole or in
art, elsewhere. All essays must
F, e in before Sept. 1, 1954.
