HENRY WITTENBERG — A
New York policeman, Henry is
o ne of the nation's outstanding
amateur wrestlers. He was on
the U. S. Olympic team that
went to Helsinki, and he also
participated in the Maccabiah
in 1950.
DON SPITZER—Don will be
one of the foremost attractions
with the American team. He
excels in the 400 meter race,
and is a former distance star of
City College of New York. Don
will 'just about get in under the
wire for the Maccabiah games.
He's in the army, but he's due
to be discharged in time to
make the trip to Israel. He has
competed in army meets in Ja-
pan and Korea.
As for the coaching staff, in
this department there are also
several outstanding sportsmen.
BRUTUS HAMILTON — He
coached the U. S. track team in
the 1952 games at Helsinski.
Now he's piloting the track
squad for the Maccabiah. Ham-
ilton has been a leading track
and field coach in the United
States since 1924.
TUBBY RASKIN—The Brook-
lyn College mentor is in charge
of the American basketball
team. Raskin, a veteran U. S.
coach, piloted the Israeli cage
team that took part in the Hel-
sinki Olympics. He has a major
responsibility for the fine per-
formance the Israeli basketball
team turned in, recently when it
placed fifth in the European
competition in Moscow.
NATHAN KAUFMAN — Physi-
cal director of the Pittsburgh
YMCA, Kaufman was chosen to
coach the American swimming
team. He'll have under his guid-
ance a dozen leading amateur
swimmers who'll compete
against top swimmers from
throughout the world.
IRVING SCHOOLMAN — A
man with long experience in
track and field events, School-
man was picked to serve as
manager of the U. S. Maccabiah
track and field team. He has
been active in the A.A.U.
These are but a few of the
players and coaches named by
the U. S. Committee for Sports
in Israel, which is sponsoring
the American contingent going
to Israel. The team will total
about 100, including some top
exhibition stars who will per-
form as art added attraction.
