JERUSALEM, (JTA)—An or-
ganization of bachelors has
sprung up in the Jewish state.
But, instead of grouping togeth-
er to protect their rights as
bachelors, these members want
to lose that select status.
A "League for the Defense of
Bachelors' Rights to Marry" has
sent its demand to the Cabinet
and Parliament members, urging
them to use their influence to
encourage the migration to Is-
rael of Jewish women from all
parts of the world.
Their memorandum pointed
out that 52 percent of the pop-
ulation is male, while 48 per-
cent is female. The "bachelors"
stated that one of the reasons
young: men are leaving agricul-
tural settlements is a dearth of
women to share their lives.
It also blames this situation
for the emigration of men from
Israel. Among other suggestions,
the memorandum proposes that
the government provide cheap
housing for newlyweds.
Recently, 22 Jewish immi-
grants returned to Hungary be-
cause they were unable to adjust
themselves to life in Israel. The
Hungarian Legation in Tel Aviv
arranged their return passage.
All of the returnees refused to
talk to correspondents, and
boarded the ship quietly.
Dulles Converses
With Spiritual Leader
While Visiting Egypt
On his world trip last spring,
Secretary of State Dulles stop-
ped off in Cairo and met Egyp-
tian Chief Rabbi Nahum. Al-
though nothing was then dis-
closed, about their conversation,
the Jewish Observer and Middle
East Review now reports that
Dulles asked the aged and blind
spiritual leader to tell him
frankly what were the real con-
ditions of Jews in Egypt. Rabbi
Nahum replied that on paper
there was no discrimination
against Jews.
In practice, however, Jews
who appied for exit visas or
passport renewals were directed
to special offices and subject to
long delays.. It took two months
for an Egyptian Jew to get pass-
port or visa back, whereas an
Egyptian would get it in two or
three days:
Furthermore, the Chief Rabbi
Said, 'since 1948 no Jews resid-
ing in Egypt were able to obtain
their naturalization under the
Nationality Law. After the
meeting, Dulles asked Colonel
Abdul Nasser about these dis-
criminations, and was told that
they would be looked into at
once. Nasser subsequently vis-
ited Rabbi Nahum and assured
him that he would take admin-
istrative action to stop discrim-
ination against Jews.
But thus far, the magazine
reports, there has been no no-
ticeable change in Egyptian
policy.
It is also reported that the
Naguib regime in Egypt will
start its own daily newspaper.
The army weekly "Al Tahrir" is
to take over the press and of-
fices of a daily paper which

OTTAWA, (JTA) — Mayor
Charlotte Whitton has indicated
that distributors of anti-Semi-
tic literature in Ottawa m a y
soon be prosecuted. An investi-
gation is now under way into
the sale of the literature here
with a view to taking court ac--
- tion, said Mrs. Whitton.
The Mayor and members of
the Board of Control have re=
ceived anti-Semitic publications
through the mail on several re--
cent occasions. The literature
was . discussed at a meeting of
the Board and referred to the
Crown Attorney for action.
Eban Kik-06111- s U.S.' Retatiorts- hip
With Arabs, Near East Situation
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Abba S.
Eban, Israel's chief delegate to
the'United Nations and its Am-
bassador to. Washington, report-
ed to the Cabinet on Israel-
United States relations.
At a public meeting of the
Israel-America Friendship
League, earlier, Eban stated that
the U.S. has no intention of de-
parting from its policy of
friendship for Israel, but that
Israel must understand Amer -
ica's difficulties, foremost among
which is the Arab world's policy
Youth Parley Expels

PORT JERVIS, N. Y., (JTA)-
The National Jewish Youth Con-
ference, sponsored by the Na -
tional Jewish Welfare Board, ex-
pelled the Jewish Young Fra-
ternalists from the conference
after finding that the JYF is an
organization whose "basic pur
poses and objectives are in di-
rect conflict with the confer-
ence."
The report, submitted to the
plenary session of the sixth an-
nual meeting of the conference
at Cejwin Camps here, found
that the JYF was directly re-
lated to the Jewish Peoples Fra-
ternal Order of the Interna -
tional Workers Order, and that,
the latter organizations were
"C ommunist organizations
whose major principles and ob--
jectives are diametrically op-
posed to the major principles
and objectives of the National
Jewish Youth Conference." The
investigating board was set up
at last year's annual meeting of
the NJYC.
of holding itself aloof from the
West.
Although the U. S. has no
reason to apologize to the Arab
world, Eban emphasized, United
States policy has had to take
into account the fact that the
Arab states have professed fear
of Israel and demanded safe;--
guards against her. It is there-
fore Israel's main task to make
it plain that Arab friendship
cannot be obtained at Israel's
expense he added.
Israel, on the other hand; is
not hostile to national libera-
tion, social reform and the eco-
nomic independence of the re-
gion, he pointed out. None of
these aims can be advanced by
s t u l t i f ying American - Israel
friendship, he continued.
Touching on the. Jerusalem
problem,- Mr. Eban said that
since the United States attitude
cn Jerusalem is consistent with
ISraers, it is "hard" to see why
the Foreign MiniStry's move to
Jerusalem was opposed - by
Washington.
American aid. to Israel was a
"model of positiveness," he as-
serted. Israel has every reason
to appreciate the caution exer-
cised by American legislators
dealing with the aid question,
Eban said.
The seven-year-old son of
Harpo Marx held up a picture
of Abraham Lincoln and gravely
declared: "This is the man who
frayed the sleeves." "You're a bit
off the beam," explained Harpo.
"Mr: Lincoln is the man who
freed the slaves. The President
who frayed the sleeves didn't
come along until many years
later."
