Turkish President Assures
Chief Rabbi of Friendship
ISTANBUL, (JTA)—Chief Rab-
bi Raphael Saban, accompanied
by a delegation of Jewish com-
munal leaders, was received by
President Djelal Bayar of the
Turkish Republic who assured
the Jewish leaders of his sympa-
thy to Jews. This was the first
visit paid by the Chief Rabbi
since his recent election to the
post of the highest spiritual
leader of the Jewish community.
The Chief Rabbi was also re-
ceived by the Turkish Prime
Minister Adnan Menderes and
by the President of the Turkish
National Assembly.
Among the problems discussed
was the present status of the
Grand Rabbinate's C o u n c i,1
which still operates under old
legislation introduced by the
Ottoman Empire 80 years ago.
The question was also raised re-
garding the legal position of as-
sets belonging to the Jewish
community in Turkey. Under a
new law, not specifically aimed
at Jews, the Jewish organiza-
tions are at present deprived of
their properties.

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
Jordan government was cen-
sured by the UN Mixed Armis-
tice Commission for an attack
on an Israeli military outpost in
the Judean Hills during which
two Israeli soldiers were killed
and a third wounded. The meet-
ing of the Commission took place
under the chairmanship of Maj.
Gen. Vagn Bennike, UN truce
supervisor.
Commenting on the attack,
Israeli authorities said the dis-
cussions recently held on a high
level between Israel and Jordan
must be viewed in the light of
what practical steps the Jordan-
ians take to discover the attack-
ers and in punishing them when
they are found.
The Israelis suggested that
they be allowed to use blood-
hounds to track down the mur-
derers. Unless practical meas-
ures are taken to implement the
high level discussions, they in-
sisted, all declarations become
only "empty words."
Another Jew was killed by
unidentified assailants in a set-
tlement in the Negev. Tracks
leading to the Egyptian fron-
tier were discovered by Israel
police authorities. An Israel unit

Israel's Thorny Problem

Dr. Pilch Emphasizes
Totality of World Jewry
ELLENVILLE, N.Y., (JTA) —
The teacher in the American
Jewish school is respdnsible for
imparting a community con-
sciousness to his students, Dr.
Judah Pilch, executive director
of the American Association for
Jewish Education, told a special
two-week workshop on Israel
sponsored by the AAJE in co-
operation with the department
of education and culture of the
JeWish Agency.
Dr. Pilch • said that the term
"Jewish community" in present
day life implies an attachment
to the local community as well
as an identification with Jews
throughout the world, especially
in Israel. "We of the Jewish
community, through our schools,
should foster this inter-Jewish
solidarity," he concluded..
