Communal Service Workers Elect
Bernstein President- at 54th Parley

ATLANTIC CITY—The influ-
ence of social and economic de-
velopments at home on current
community welfare plans and
programs Were highlighted at
the 54th annual meeting of the
National Conference of Jewish
Communal Service, held here
May 24 to 27.*
The National Association 'd f
Jewish Center Workers and the
National Council for Jewish Ed-
ucation also participated in the
conference.
Philip Bernstein of Forest
Hills, Long Island, associate di-
rector of the Council Federations
and Welfare
Funds, was
elected Presi-
dent of NCJCS
for 1953-1954.
In a keynote
address, William
Avrunin, asso-
ciate director of
the Detroit Jew-
ith Welfare Fed-
eration, warned
that "the eco-
nomic climate
has a vise-like
Bernstein influence on
Jewish communal services. In
adverse circumstances it would
force a reduction of services and
at the same time—aggravate the
need of these services, multiply-
ing the problems for the fields
of family service, child care, the
aged, community,- relations."
Significant increases in pay-
ments for health and welfare
services by members of the com-..
munity have been recorded as a
result of current economic con-
ditions at home; Avrunin point-
ed out. "In --Jewish hospitals,

and Milton M. Weinstein and Dr.
Lawrence I. Yaff a.
Maxwell M. Lowe, junior past
president, is chairman of the
administrative committee. In-
stallation ceremonies will be fol-
lowed by a reception and dance.
