Many Jewish authors have
written about mothers. Here is
a poem, a grown-up poem, that
I think you will like. It tells how
a Jewish mother, even though
her home is very plain and
modest, becomes a Princes's when
the Sabbath comes.
SABBATH EVE*
By Jessie Sampter
Sarah, the Princess, in her door
Stands basking in the lowered
sun;
The Sabbath light is on her face
Of many labors done.
Her brow is lined with graven
lines,
A kerchief whitely round it tied;
Mother of mothers, tall and
strong,
Broad-hipped and tender-eyed!
The tenements teem with
youth
Resound with children of her
kin;
But she stands silent, Sabbath-
eyed,
Her quiet soul within.
When after days of fruitless toil
There comes the hope of Sab-
bath night,
Their little 700171 and scanty
meal
She sanctifies with light. .
The sun has set; but in her eyes

R4' caw,
all done, they'll wake mother
and invite her to be their guest
at the breakfast table.
Here's what they're going to
have—Judy will squeeze orange
juice and put it into the refri-
gerator to chill. She'll decorate
each glass with half- of a, fresh
strawberry or a sliver of orange.
Then she'll set the table. Dad-
dy will help her spread out a
fresh bright cloth. At each place
she'll .put a folded napkin, a
breakfast-size plate, a juice
glass, a. fork and spoon, cups
and saucers for mother a n d
daddy and milk glasses for her-
self and Danny. In the center,
she'll put sugar, cream, butter
and syrup or jam (with a plate
underneath to c a t c h the
"drips")*.
Meanwhile, Danny will have
taken the pancake mix from the
shelf and stirred into it the
proper- amount of milk. The re-
cipe on the package will tell him
just how. Perhaps daddy will
prepare coffee. Or Danny could
boil a kettle of water. for instant
coffee.
Danny will get out the griddle,
spread a bit of butter on it, and
put it on the stove. Daddy will
supervise the fire. While the
griddle is heating, it will be time
to waken mother.
By the time she is washed and
ready for breakfast, the juice
will be poured,, the pancakes hot
and tempting, the coffee ready.
And what a wonderful surprise
for mother!
You could do the same at your
house. Perhaps you like cereal
or eggs for breakfast. Or maybe
daddy would go to the bakery
and bring home hot rolls which
you can serve with butter and
cream cheese.
This is just one suggestion for
a way to celebrate Mother's Day.
I'm sure you can think of others.
Above all, be considerate and do
what mother tells you, not just
on Mother's Day, but every day!
Remember to "H on or t h y
mother."
Your friend, MIRIAM.
