Re-Elect

Circuit Court
Judge

FRANK

FITZGERALD

Judge William Friedman this
week issued a statement strong-
ly urging the election of William
D. Merrifield as 6, member of
the Detroit Board of Education.
Merrifield, a Detroiter for 40
of his 44 years, is director of
industrial education at Chrysler
Corporation, is a past president
of the James Vernor PTA, holds
an A.B. degree from Georgetown
University and a master of
education degree from the Uni-
versity of Kentucky. He was a
high school teacher and princi-
pal for 11 years, and served as
a special lecturer in education
at Wayne University.
"Merrifield is vitally c o n-
cerned with inaugurating a pro-
gram for the development of
sound economic thinking and
t h e preservation of liberty,"
Judge Friedman stated. "Detroit
needs a realistic educational
program, aimed at doing the
most good for the 85 per cent
of the school pupils who never
go to college, such as Merrifield
advocates." Judge Friedman
also stated:
"The student must be pre-
pared to face life when he fin-
ishes high school. He must be
given an educational b a c k-
ground that will enable him to
operate in all of the areas in
which he is going to have to
operate as long as he lives. The
youngsters have g o t to be
taught to think for themselves.
A realistic educational program
should help children do • that
sort of thing. I am convinced
that Mr. Merrifield is the man
we can entrust with the respon-
sibility of pursing such a pro-
°Tam "
