ABRAHAM SRERE (left) presents the annual Fred M. Butzel
Award for distinguished communal service to WILLIAM FRIED-
MAN, former circuit judge, civic leader and past president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation. Srere, president of the Fred M. Butzel
Award Association, made the presentation at - the Federation's
annual meeting last week. On the right is SAMUEL H. RUBINER,
president of Federation. The principal address at the meeting was
delivered by Moses Beckelman, JDC overseas director; who de-
scribed the plight of Jews behind the Iron Curtain and the struggle
to rescue them and the oppressed Jews in Moslem countries.
Council Committee Issues Findiners
Of 'Out-of-Line' Kosher Meat Prices
Conclusions reached by the
internal relations committee of
the Jewish Community Council
regarding its investigation of
• the prices of kosher meat are
that the drop in kosher prices is
not commensurate with the
overall drop in wholesale prices,
it was reported this -week by
Louis Rosenzweig, chairman of
the committee.
A detailed chart prepared for
JDC Increases Food
For Overseas Jews
the committee points out that
a "tremendous difference" exists
in the reductions offered on the
retail meat level by kosher and
non-kosher butcher shops.
Some of the detailed figures
compared in the study of per-
centage drops in prices on ko-
sher and non-kosher markets
are: rib roast, non-kosher, 34%,
kosher, 11%; rib steak, non-
kosher, 29%, kosher, 11%; bris-
ket, non-kosher, 20%, kosher,
17%; chuck, non-kosher, 37%,
kosher, 19%; liver, non kosher,
16%, kosher, 12%; soft neck,
non-kosher, 25%, kosher, 30% -;
boneless c h u c k, non - kosher,
23%, kosher, 21%; hamburger,
47%, kosher, 31%.
The method used for gauging
retail prices of non-kosher meat
was to average prices in five
non-kosher stores, since the
purchaser -of non-kosher. meat
may shop around to bargain for
prices, while kosher meat prices
are standardized.
In issuing its report, the com-
mittee called on the Kosher
Butchers to reduce their prices
in proportion to non-kosher
shops, and warned of driving
away from the observance of
kashrut those Jewish housewives
who would purchase kosher
meat if price differences "were
not so glaringly' obvious."
A spokesman for the Detroit
Retail Kosher Butcher's Associ-
ation stated that the organization
still has not been contacted by
the Council committee. He add-
ed that after the Passover holi-
day the Association will answer
Council charges.
Editor, The Jewish News:
Looking over an old edition of
the Psalms (1903), published by
the. Jewish Publication Society,
I found an annotation written
at the marginal line for Psalm
104 by my late son, Dr. Ralph
G. Aronstam, quoting Von Hum-
boldt: "Psalm 104 represents the
image of the whole cosmos."
Upon reading Chenikowsky's
translation of Prof. Breasted's
interpretation of a papyrus ex-
cavated from the tomb of Tut-
enkhamen, supposed to have
been written by Akhnaton and
his wife Nefer-Nefer Itti, I' find
Psalm 104 almost intact therein.
This seems to be rather strange!
Psalm 104 snd the payrus of
Akhnaton having such strong
resemblance—slmost in toto—to
the Hebrew Psalm. This is a
matter to be properly elucidated
by our achaeoldgists and Egyp-
tologists.
Some modern deny this his-
toricity of Moses, and yet the
celebrated papyrus of George
Ebers—a German Jew—distinct-
ly mentions the name of Moses,
which in the hieratic spelling
would be "Meshu," equivalent to
the Hebrew "Moshe." Thus the
story of Moses is not a fable or
legend, but is historically a fact.
Our moderns are overstepping
themselves in relegating the
Bible to the domain of fiction
and legend.
Even Prof. Einstein, although
putting all the theories on grav-
itation, magnetism, electricity
and relativity into one package,
in his forthcoming work "The
Unified Field Theory" admits
the Absoluteness of Light. This
is the only thing in the cosmos
