Red Cross Drive
To Raise. $396,000
Nearly 1,000 men and women
volunteers have begun a month-
long canvas of the city a n d
county residential areas in quest
of funds to round out the De-
troit Red Cross Chapter's bud-
get of $1,992,000 for the next
fiscal year. The major part of
this money was raised in the
Torch drive last fall. The chap-
ter needs $396,000 more to fin-
ance its services, including $200,-
000 recently added to defray
the cost of collecting blood for
gamma globulin, to be used in
preventing o r 'modifying t h e
crippling effects of polio. -
"Because thousands of fam-
ilies are enrolled in Red Cross
through their gifts to United
Foundation our volunteers face
a difficult task," said William E.
Esser y, campaign chairman.
"The volunteers know we have
given them a tough assignment,
but that seems to make them all
the more determined to find
those who haven't contributed
and give them an opportunity to
do their part."
Campaign headquarters have
been established in the R e d
Cross Building, 153 E. Elizabeth.
Many more volunteers are need-
ed to pick up Red Cross gifts in
their own neighborhoods. Those
willing to help may enroll by
calling WO. 1-3900.
