Nicholas Fenakel put out the
call for an orchestra .to accom-
pany his 35 voice singing group,
Zang more or less reluctantly
answered the call . . . The 10
men and women who got to-
gether to form an orchestra for
last week's premiere perform-
ance Music Festival at Congre-
gation Adas Shalom had such a
bang-up time rehearsing and
making beautiful music together
that businesses were neglected
and trips to Florida postponed.

JERRY WEINGARDEN and
Richard Barnett, Mumford High
School seniors, may have a few
guffaws thrown their way, but
they're stuck .. , and they know
it! . . . The boys ridiculed the
gals of Sigma Theta Pi so much
about their lack of salesman-
ship in selling tickets for the
sorority's "S p r i n g Jubilee,"
March 20, at the Masonic Tem-
ple, that the girls so much as
said, "Okay, if you fellows are
so good, you can help us!" . . .
The two boys are practically
knee-deep in tickets . . while
the girls go about their own
way enroute to a sell-out . .
with little help, so far, from the
so-called "super-salesmen" . . .
Jerry Weingarden and Richard
Barnett.

IN 1948, FOUR local young
adult leaders, interested in set--
ting up procedures for date
clearance, conceived the idea
for such a group to be organ-
ized . . . the first of its kind ever
started in Detroit . With
Leonard Baruch as the first
president, the other organizers,
Natalie Gaines, Sol Schwartz
and Jerry Kenn-Ian joined him
in not only seeing a dream come
true, but also in watching the
growth of an organization far
beyond the realm of their orig-
inal idea . . . The Jewish Young
Adult Council greeted the many
groups that wanted to join . .
until the Council program ex-
panded to include social, cul-
tural and civic affairs beyond
the scope of any individual
group.
* * *
TODAY; THE Jewish Young
Adult Council boasts a mem-
bership of 20 organizations, in-
cluding fraternities, sororities,
young adult synagogue, temple
and Zionist groups . There
have been many attempts to
copy the Y.A.C. but all have
failed . . . Only the original
group, sponsored by the Jewish
Community Center, remains in
existence . . . continuing in its
magnificent work as an invalu-
able meeting place for exchange
of experiences and ideas .
Anne Zelonka is president, Lar-
ry Pernick, vice president, Joyce
Weckstein, secretary, and Wil-
liam Shanfield, treasurer .
With a wonderful winter week-
end at Tamarack Hills recently
behind them, the Council's new-
est project is their annual Purim
Dance and Carnival, March 1,
at the Jewish Center on Davi-
son . . Betty Marcus is chair-
man of the affair.

AFTER 17 YEARS of service
to the Jewish community, the
Aaron DeRoy Memorial Build-
ing, or Jewish Community Cen-
ter . on Woodward, will be sold
to the City as soon as the pro-
posed price is agreed upon by
the Common Council . after
recommendation by the Depart-
ment of Parks and Recreation
• . The price of $460,000 was set
at a meeting of representatives
of the center and City officials
• . The building is considered
to be an ideal addition to pres-
ent City play facilities . . It
contains two gymnasiums, an
auditorium, swimming pool,
eight large club rooms, a boxing
room, three handball courts, a
squash court, game room and
other facilities.
