WALTHAM, Mass. — It's of-
ficial now—no longer can any-
one deny that Israel has a bona-
fide, full - fledged.. government.
The word "red tape" (sachevit)
has taken its place in the He-
brew language.
The word is one of the many
newly-coined terms to be in-
cluded in the first up-to-date
dictionary of modern He b r e w
; usages compiled since the
j founding of the new state. Now
in the process of completion,
, the lexicography is being pre-
, pared by Shlomo Marenof, as-
( sistant professor of Near Eastern
I languages a n d civilizations in
the Kaufman Foundation, at
Brandeis University.
The 5,000, word dictionary will
include the Hebrew designations
for such post-Biblical innova-
tions as the jeep (gip), and bull-
dozer ("bull-dozer").

in the city who performed a
more vital task. In connection
with her work for U.S. Navy re-
cruiting, she was commissioned
a commander in . the Navy, and
received a citation from James
Forrestal, then Secretary of War.
Mrs. Gitlin was an organizer
and is currently a member of
the board of the United States
Navy League, Women's Council.
She also is a member of the cit-
izen's committee of the National
Foundation of Infantile Paraly-
sis, and has a ditation for her
fund-raising leadership in the
American Society for Cancer
Control.
In recognition of these acts
and the many important duties
she has performed for the Mai-
monides Auxiliary, including a
term as president in 1937, mem-
bers of the community will try

a testimonial dinner by Maimon-
ides on Wednesday, at the Sher-.
aton Cadillac Hotel.
Guest speakers will be George
Stark, Detroit News writer, and
his poetess wife, Anne Campbell.
Emma Schaver, accompanied on
the piano by Rebecca Frohman,
will provide a musical interlude.
Mrs. H. S. Mellen will be toast-
mistress.
. Mrs. Gitlin's career in public
life began many years ago when
she served with the Detroit De-
partment of Public Welfare.
With that agency she spent 15
years as supervisor of the reha-
bilitation of the handicapped.
In 1937, she founded the Mt.
Sinai Hospital Association,
which has since grown to a
membership of 4,000.. women.

club meets at 7:30 p.m., Mon-
day and Tuesday.

learning the techniques involved

rael Cabinet has accepted "with
regret" the resignation of Gem
Yigal Yadin as Chief of Staff of
the Israel Defense Army. Gen.
Mordechai M a k l e f f was ap-
pointed his successor. At 32,
Gen.. Makleff, is believed to be
the youngest Chief • of Staff
anywhere in the world.
Gen. Yadin's letter of resigna-
tion was read in a brief cere-
mony in the office of Premier
David Ben-Gurion. • With Min-
isters lined up on one side of
the room, and the other filled
i with high ranking Army of-
ficers, Gen.. Yadin handed his
standard of office to the Prem-
ier, who in turn conferred it
upon Gen. Makleff.
The new Chief of Staff was
born at Motza, suburb of. Jeru-
salem, and was left an orphan
when his parents were murdered
by Arabs in the 1929 riots. - He
served with the Jewish Brigade
