does, does he?" bellowed the
outraged diner. "You just march
that steak back to the chef and
tell him to ram it down his
throat" . . . Back came the
waiter with the same old steak.
"I'm very sorry, sir" he reported,
"but there are two steaks and
four lamb chops ahead of you."
CHILDREN'S DEPT. . . . A lit-
tle tot of the community who
had just been promoted to the
fourth grade at Roosevelt
School, wept on the shoulder of
her teacher of the third grade.
"Oh, Miss . . . ," she sobbed,
why aren't you smart enough to
teach me again this term?" . . .
The Sholem Aleichem Sunday
School teacher asked little Mau-
rice Cohen, "If you had a large,
good apple and a small, wormy
one, and you were told to divide
it with your brother, which
would you give him?" ... Mau-
rice answered, "Do you mean my
big brother or my little broth-

IT WAS 22 YEARS AGO, in
1930, that the beginning of an
organization of charitable wom-
en was formulated . . . destined
to become a major group in the
workings of an ever-growing
community . • . Mrs. Bessie First,
a member of the Women's Aux-
iliary of the Beth Yehudah
Synagogue on Pingree Ave.,
started it by urging the younger
set at that time to form a group
of their own . . . which eight of
them did .. . A number of the
younger members later began
the Primrose Benevolent Club
. Today, that small group,
originally encouraged by Mrs.
First, with charter members,
Fannie Friedfnan, Sarah Gross,
Mollie Manilla, Gertie Molitz,
Fay Margolis, Frieda Milgrom,
Becky Weinman and *Rose
Wright, their president, has
grown into an organization of
75 women . . . whose annual
fund-raising affairs are entirely
allocated for philanthropic and
charitable purposes . . • . Their
18th annual donor luncheon,
Nov. 4, at the Sheraton-Cadillac,
will include a fashion show and
entertainment by some of the
tap-notch "names" in show ,biz
appearing in Detroit . . . Mrs.
Lena Zohott is the present pres-
ident of the Primrose organiza-
tion that never says "no" to any
worthy cause that may arise.
