T
AT THE BONDS FOR ISRAEL
brunch preceding the Maurice
Rentner Fashion Show, seeing
the bagels before him, Rentner
reduced all formality by refer-
ring to them as "Israeli Crum-
pets."
* * *
FOLLOWING THE brunch,
Rentner told us what had
proved to be the turning point
in his career . . . He was only
17 and a dress salesman when
his boss gave him $25 and told
him to try and sell B. Siegel in
Detroit. He came with his sam-
ple cases and then waited day
after day for Siegel to see him
. . . The receptionist, noticing
his youth, ignored young Rent-
ner and , kept admitting other
salesmen with hardly a wait .. .
Finally disgusted and running
out of money, he left his cases
with_a note attached, "These are
my samples. If you like them,
I am staying at,. Hotel Cadillac"
. . . While signing that note,
Rentner admits that if that
phone call hadn't come he
wouldn't be in the dress business
today.

WHILE HAVING A soda after
the theater in New York, re-
cently, Rentner saw a woman
wearing a dress with lace cuffs
and plaid jacket . . • Thinking
it so beautiful he made mention
to his wife and kept looking at
it while he sipped his soda . . .
As they were leaving, the wom-
an recognized him and asked,
"You're Mr. Rentner, aren't you?
. I can tell you're admiring
the dress I'm wearing." . . . The
designer replied to . the affirma-
tive. "Thank you," she said, "but
it was designed by you nine
years ago!" . . . She turned out
to be one of the wealthiest worn-
en in Chicago.

ALL THE AMERICAN tourists
who went abroad during the
past season visited the WeAern
European capital . but only
a few went to Central Europe,
and almost none to Vienna on
account of the Russian zone .. .
So. when Julius and Marguerite
Chajes promenaded on Vienna's
main street, they were quite
sure to be the only Detroiters
there . . . Suddenly a couple
stopped them and exchanged
"How are you? When did you

your concerts? We never miss
your Detprit appearances, etc.,
and we always read about you.

WHEN JERRY CLEMENTS got
news at the Sutton & Clements
Four Dukes Supper Club that
stinger Billy Daniels couldn't
appear, last week, because of a
heart attack, he rushed to Chi-
eago where the star was appear-
ing and insisted that his own
doctor look at him . . . Jerry's
doc examined Daniels and in
the final analysis said it was a
miracle he was still alive ! . . .
Since Daniels was the hottest
thing in show business today,
Jerry tried to get a substitute
act with equal billing but none
were available . . Comedian
Jackie Miles consented to come
in only after Jerry's plight be-
came more alarming and be-
cause of their close friendship
When he arrived, Jackie al-
most backed out, saying to Jer-
ry, "Hey, I shouldn't be working,
this is Rosh Hashanah!" . But
