were seriously hampered because
of lack of texts and technical
journals.
As a result of Dr. Zondek's re-
quest for help the Society has
embarked on a campaign to pro-
vide both scholarship funds and
books for the libraries of two
medical institutions. Dr. Maury
Sanger, a New York physician,
president of the Society, said
they hoped to be able to provide
at least 100 scholarships for Is
rael in the next academic year
and - a minimum of 500 books.
The cost of educating a medical
student in Israel, he explained,
is about $1,000 a year and it is
estimated that $10,0100 would be
needed to purchase books in this
country.
The Society announced that in
response to Dr. Zondek's appeal,
Schering Corporation, one of the
world's foremost manufacturers
of hormones, has made a grant
for the purchase of medical text
books for use in Israel medical
schools.
Zondek made it clear to
officials of the Society that th.e
scholarship funds provided were
not outright grants, but were to
be repaid by the scholarship
students after they entered pri-
vate practice. The students
themselves, he said, requested
that the loans be repaid so that
the money could be used to edu-
cate additional worthy students
in the future. .
The Medical Student's Aid So-
ciety was founded at the close
of the war to,. assist devasted
countries in getting their medi-
cal schools operating again. The
Society has provided scholarship
funds and other technical as-
sistance to most European coun-
tries. The decision to aid Israel
at this time, the Society said.
is based on the critical medical
situation faced in that country
as a result of the tremendous
itiflux of immigration.
