Sgt. Howard A. Gilstein of
Providence, R.I., i n t e l l i g ence
•sergeant of the 3rd Division's
7th Infantry Regiment in Korea
and a world traveler for more
than five years, has decided to
settle down in the United States
Army.
In 1947, the foot-loose adven-
turer fought in
Indonesia with
guerilla f or c es
against the Na-
tiona list gov-
ernment. In
1948, he was a
gun runner in
France,. t r a ns-
porting contra-
band weapons
and ammunition W•
to t h e Iwaeli Sgt. Gilstein
forces in Palestine. He was
commissioned a first lieutenant
in the Israeli Army in 1948, tak-
ing part in all major desert
campaigns against the A r a b
Legion until 1950.
After joining the U.S. Army in
Jan., 1951, Gilstein's combat ex-
perience was utilized and he was
shipped as a cadreman to Camp
Edwards, Mass., where he as-
sisted in the basic training of
new troops. He arrived in Korea
the following - August and was
assigned to the first Cavalry Di-
vision. When the Division was
shipped to Japan, Gilstein was
assigned to his present unit.

Maps Expanded Service

PARIS, France—The establish-
ment of a European field office
of the World Federation of
YMHAs and Jewish Community
Centers was approved at the
World Federation's council meet-
ing held here recently. Mrs.
Samued R. Glogower represent-
ed Detroit.
The European field office will
be administered by a field secre-
tary and will serve Jewish com-
munities and youth groups in
France, Belgium, Holland, Italy,
England, Norway, Sweden, Den-
mark, Finland and in other
countries of Western Europe as
the need arises.
The delegates also made plans
for the recruiting and training
of professional workers. Louis
Kraft, acting general secretary
of the World Federation, an-
nounced that Fulbright scholar-
ships would be available to suit-
able candidates in countries
which qualify under the Ful-
bright Act. Mr. Kraft also re-
ported that the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee has made a
grant of $25,000 toward the
financing of the YMHA in Paris.
Frank L. Weil of New York,
honorary JWB presiden t, was
reelected president of the World
Federation. Mrs. Glogower was
elected one of the vice-presi-
dents.
