WHEN THE PRO MUSICA
recently celebrated its silver
jubilee with a banquet at the
Statler Hotel, the guest speaker
was Paul Hume of the Washing-
ton Post . . . who had received
that "famous" letter from Presi-
dent Truman .. . Hume, who
was introduced as leading critic
and music professor at the
Georgetown University and as a
singer. gave a most eloquent and
enlightening speech about the
future of our music . . . After
the address, most of the audi-
ence rushed over to congratulate
him, and Julius Chajes intro-
duced him and Marguerite Ko
Zenn as "Mr. and Mrs. Chajes,
spelled, C-H-A-J-E-S" . . .
Their experiences with people
not recognizing the name un-
less it is spelled for them
brought this on . . But the
surprise of the Chajes couple
was most pleasant when Hume
exclaimed, "Julius! I sang your
music!" ... Hume is the soloist
in Washington's First Presby-
terian Church. which only re-
cently presented Julius' 142
Psalm for soloists. choir and

Lampert asked Frank Birnbaum
the name of "that short fellow
over there." . . . When Frank
told him his name was Sam
Blender, a happy reunion re-
sulted . . . The two staring
gents were former classmates at
the High School of Commerce
in New York with baseball im-
mortal, Lou Gehrig . . . over 30
