Churchill Commends
Israel; Voices liop
For Arabs' Accord

Britain's Prime Minister Win-
ston Churchill, in his address to
the U. S. Congress last week,
made this statement on Israel:
"In the Middle East enormous
changes have also taken place
since I was last in power in my
own country. When the war
ended the Western nations were
respected and predominant
throughout these ancient lands
and there were quite a lot of
people who had a good word to
say about Great Britain.
"Today it is a somber and con-
fusing scene. Yet there is still
some sunshine as well as
shadow.
"From the days of the Balfour
Declaration I have desired that
the Jews should have a national
home and I've worked for that
end. I rejoice to pay my tribute.
here to the achievements • of
those who have founded the
Israelite State, who have de-
fehded themselves with tenacity
and who offer asylum to great
numbers of Jewish refugees. I
hope that with their aid they
may convert deserts into gar-
dens. But if they are to enjoy
peace and prosperity they must
strive to renew and preserve
their friendly relations with the
Arab world, without which wide-
spread misery might follow all."
His friendly reference to Is-
rael was greeted with prolonged
applause by the members of
both Houses of Congress.

Plea Should Be Directed
To Arabs, Says Goldstein

NEW YORK, (JTA) —Winston
Churchill's plea for peace in the
Middle East should have been
addressed not only to Israel "but
also—and primarily—to the Ar-
ab states," Dr. Israel Goldstein,
president of the American Jew-
ish Congress, told a joint meet-
ing of the national executive
and administrative committees
of AJC. Dr. Goldstein asserted
that the Jews of the world will
appreciate the friendly attitude
expressed by the Prime Minister
toward Israel in his address.
Dr. Maurice L. Perlzweig,
World Jewish Congress consult-
ant to the United Nations-, told
the meeting that the struggle for
civil rights and human equality
in the U. S. is of "immense im-
portance" to the success of
American f or e i g n policy. Dr.
Perlzweig, who has just returned
from a trip to India and South-
east Asia, reported that "a single
bomb thrown it Florida wipes
out many months of devoted
work by U. S. representatives
laboring to convince millions of
people in Communist Asian na-
tions that America is the pro-
tagonist of justice and freedom."

Dr. Goldmann Hints
At Agency Absorption
Of Non-Zionist Faction

NEW YORK, (JTA)—The pos-

sibility of including, non-Zion-
ists in the Jewish agency after
the Israel Parliament grants the
Agency a special status was in-
dicated by Dr: Nahum Gold-
iriRnn, addressing the opening
session of the mid-winter con-
ference of Hada.ssah.
Goldmann told Hadassah
delegates he hoped the Israel
Parliament would soon pass the
bill granting the Agency the
"authority to deal with immi-
gration, absorption and similar
activities and to co-ordinate the
work in this field of other non-
Israel organizations."
Opposition to this status by
some non-Zionist groups, Dr.
Goldmann said, was "based pri-
marily on the misconception
that it would apply not only in
Israel, but all over the world.
The Zionist movement has nev-
er asked. for such status," he
emphasized.
Mrs. Samuel W. Halprin, who
is completing a four-year term
as national president, reviewed
the program of Hadassah,
stressing its role in helping Is-
rael secure its future.

Truman Lauds Hebrew As Life's Ethical Basis

NEW YORK, (JTA)—"Hebraic
culture carries within it the tra-
ditions of the Prophets of old
who founded the ethical system
by which we are trying to live
today," President Truman de-
clared in a message to the 35th
annual dinner celebration of
Histadruth Iv r i t h of America,
addressed to Samuel, J. Borow-
sky, president of the organiza-
tion.
Dr. Abba Hillel Sister, speak-
ing at the dinner at the Waldorf
Astoria, said that adherence to
the Hebrew traditions and lan-
guage is the only guarantee of
the continued existence of the
Jewish community as a cultural
entity in the United States. Mes-
sages of congratulations were
received from Israel's Premier
David Ben-Gurion, Foreign Min-
ister Moshe Sharett • and others.
Borowsky declared that there
is "a prevailing recognition on
the part of the American Jew-
ish community that a knowledge
and appreciation of the Hebrew
language is fundamental." The
aims and the purposes of the or-
ganization, he stated, have as-

sumed greater significance now
in the light of the establishment
of the Jewish State.
