Einstein Town, U.S.A.:
Einstein No Slacker; Canvasses
House to House for Jewish Cause;
Princeton Loves Its No.1 Citizen
By SAM COHEN
(American Jewish Press Feature)
PRINCETON, N. J.—This town
contains one of America's great-
est seats of learning and the
world's foremost scientist and
foremost Jew. What about the
relations of the Jewish com-
munity of Princeton with its fa-
mous citizen, Prof. Albert Ein-
stein?
I asked Harry Ballot, Prince-
ton clothing .merchant who has
been in Princeton longer than
any other Jew and who has
worked with Prof. Einstein in
the United Jewish Appeal, and
his reply was:
"Prof. Einstein is ever ready
to lend a hand, but we try not
to bother him too much. We
try to spare him as much as
possible from the curiosity
seekers."
Princeton is really divided in
two parts, the business town
and the University, and ..while
they overlap, from a Jewish
point of view, the tWo are quite
distinct.
Mr. Ballot estimates that be-
tween 10 and 15 per .cent of the
Jewish population are inter-
married. The once Orthodox
synagogue found existence too
hard and was liquidated. Now
a Conservative synagogue has
been formed at the Jewish Cen-
ter. Few of the Jews of the busi-
ness part of the town have any
Jewish contacts outside of the
United Jewish Appeal. Jewish
publications rarely reach any of
the Jews of the business part
of the town. A student from a
New York seminary visits the
town and holds services every
Friday night. There usually are
about a couple of ni.invanim
present.
In the matter of the United
Jewish Appeal however, there is
great vitality shown. The town's
quota of 820,000 pledged will be
collected 98 per cent, according,
to Mr. Ballot. Prof. Einstein, co-
chairman of the local UJA drive,
does - more than just lend the
prestige of his =he. He insists
on his share of house to house
canvassing.
Several years ago when the
UJA was complaining of sub-
sCriptions not being up to the
previous mark, Einstein wrote
a letter to headquarters say-
ing that his experience for
the year had been very sat-
isfactory.
The great scientist seeking
to explore the secrets of the
operation of the cosmos is not
too busy to canvas the butch-
er for a subscription to the
UJA.
Princetonians have by now
gotten used to seeing him walk-
ing along Mercer St. and down
to Nassau. Princeton, after all,
is a university town and one
could not throw a stone with-
out striking one or two great
scientists from the University
or from the Instil to for Ad- -
Vanced Studies.
The story . is told that once
Dr. Einstein was walking along
New York's Fifth Avenue with
a friend who commented that
if Lana Turner were walking,
she would attract more atten-
tion. Whereupon Einstein re-
plied. "She has more to show."
The story nothwithstanding,
Einstein's .p r e s e n c e in New
York can always attract a crowd,
but in Princeton—well, for one
thing—there are no crowds. The
town seems to be bathed steadi-
ly in a kind of .Sabbath quiet
except for the lunch hour, when
people emerge to eat.
But behind the walls of the
University, there is, of course,
a great deal of intellectual ac-
tivity going on—and much more
cultural Jewish activity. The
Jewish population of the Uni-
versity also exceeds that of the
business part of the town. The
all-year-around Jewish popula-
tion of Princeton does not ex-
ceed 120 persons, according to
Mr. Ballot, but the Jewish stu-
dent body of the University
numbers around 325. There has
of late been a regularly increas-
ing enrolling of Jewish students
at the University according to
Prof. Irving M. Levey, .chaplain
for the Jewish studentS and di-
rector of the Hillel Foundation.
Years back, a Jewish stu-
dent at Princeton was a rari-
ty. Once upon a time, a mem-
- ber of Columbia University
chided Prof. Woodrow Wilson,
• then president of Princeton,
on his University's "deadness."
"Well," Wilson replied hu-
morously, "of course Columbia
is much more alive, for it is
written in Scripture, The
Keeper of Israel neither slum-
bereth nor sleepeth."

is untrue. There was one lad,
