Yugos Urged to Give

The Oldest Hagadah
NEW YORK (AJP)—A one-
man campaign to retreive for
world Jewry what is believed to
be the oldest Hagadah in exist-
ence appears on the brink of
success.
Returned from Europe after a
several-month-long visit, Sidney
Garber, a young attorney, dis-
closed that he had received a
promise from Yugoslavian offi-
cials that serious consideration
would be afforded his request
that a hand-painted 14th cen-
tury Hagadah be given to Amer-
ican. or Israeli Jewry as a token
of good will by Marshal Tito's
government.
Garber pointed out to Yugo-
slavian authorities that the
Jewish treasure, encased in lead
boxes, served no purpose in the
Balkans because of the scarcity
of the Jewish population.
Yugoslavian officials, accord-
ing to Garber, are considering
his suggestion that the Hagadah
be displayed in a Jewish art
gallery in the United States
sometime next year and then be
presented to Israel as a gift.
DR. EDWARD STEIN has been
